Toyota and Subaru have signed an agreement which will see the jointly developed GT86 and BRZ progress into the next decade

Toyota and Subaru have signed another business agreement, which will see the pair jointly develop next-generation versions of the GT86 and BRZ sports cars. This revised business partnership follows the announcement on the pair’s jointly developed all-wheel-drive battery-electric vehicle.

Exact specifications on the second-generation GT86 and BRZ are yet to be announced, but Toyota has confirmed that both cars will be rear-wheel-drive. Toyota has also said that the two vehicles will be completely new from the ground up, rather than a simple rehash of the current models.

Toyota and Subaru to co-develop new electric car platform

Given the average production cycle of a vehicle is around seven to eight years, and the existing GT86 and BRZ were both launched in 2012, it’s likely that the finished second-generation editions will launch towards the end of 2020.


The agreement has also seen Toyota increase its stake in Subaru by 3.17 per cent, upping its overall ownership to 20 per cent. The deal will further “develop and strengthen” the brands’ long-term partnership, according to both brands.

American start-up Bollinger has officially unveiled its no-nonsense, retro-styled all-electric B1 SUV and B2 pick-up truck

Bollinger has officially launched its all-electric B1 and B2 off-roaders. The Amercan start-up EV manufacturer claims they are “the world’s most capable” sports utility truck and pick-up truck respectively, with both models offering a configurable body shell, a stripped-back interior and class-leading carrying capacity and off-road ability.

The B1 and B2 share the same all-electric powertrain, with a 120kWh battery pack, an electric motor for each axle, permanent four-wheel-drive and a regenerative braking system. Bollinger says the motors have an output of 606bhp and 906Nm of torque, which gives both vehicles a 0–60mph time of 4.5 seconds, a top speed of 100mph and a range of 200 miles.

Both vehicles’ battery packs offer support for either 220V charging via a conventional household socket, or DC fast-charging via a commercially available CCS port. Bollinger claims the former system allows a full recharge in 10 hours, while the latter can brim the battery in just 75 minutes.

Initial specifications suggest that the B1 SUV will be more capable than the new Land Rover Defender. The B1 comes with a two-speed high- and low-range gearbox, a near 50:50 weight distribution and approach and departure angles of 52 and 43 degrees – compared to the Defender’s respective figures of 38 and 40 degrees. 

However, due to its longer wheelbase, the B1’s breakover angle is marginally poorer than the Defender’s at only 30 degrees; an issue which Bollinger will eventually remedy with the introduction of a two-door, short-wheelbase version later in the car’s life-span.

The B1 and B2 feature removable glass, doors, rear seats and roof panels, as well as a removable windscreen. Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, bluetooth connectivity and six 110V sockets scattered throughout the cabin. Buyers will also be able to spec heated seats, glass roof panels and a winch as optional extras.

Inside, there’s little else other than an analogue gauge cluster, a leather-trimmed steering wheel and seating for four. Both models also feature Bollinger’s patented “pass through” panels between the rear bed, cabin and under-bonnet storage area. As such, the B1 can transport items up to five metres long, while the B2 can carry items almost six metres long.

The B1 and B2 both have a payload of 5201lbs (2,360kg), a maximum towing capacity of 7,500lbs (3,400kg) and 15-inches of ground clearance. There’s around 400 litres of storage space under the bonnet of both models and Bollinger claims that the B2 can carry 72 sheets of 4 x 8½ foot plywood with the rear seats removed.

Bollinger is currently taking reservations for the B1 and B2, with the intent of starting production in mid-2020. The firm will prioritise the American market first, although Bollinger says it is planning to eventually sell both models overseas, in right-hand-drive format. Prices will be announced towards the end of this year, with first deliveries will due in 2021.

The 46th biennial Tokyo Motor Show will open its doors to the world’s press on Thursday 24 October and preview a host of new and upcoming models from Japanese brands.

Much like the Frankfurt Motor Show’s relationship with the German automotive industry, the Tokyo Motor Show is an important event for Japanese manufacturers. This year, important domestic brands such as HondaMazda and Mitsubishi already have launches scheduled, while ToyotaNissan and Subaru are expected to reveal plans in the coming weeks.

Honda

• Honda Jazz

The next generation Honda Jazz will get hybrid drive and a rugged new look, with the aim of muscling in on the supermini SUV marketl. Our exclusive image shows its nose will feature larger headlamps, a more prominent grille and a chunky bumper. Black plastic cladding around the wheel arches complete the rough and ready redesign.

We expect the new Jazz hybrid will use a similar powertrain to the “Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive” (i-MMD) set-up used by the CR-V SUV. Under low-demand driving situations, the combustion engine will act as a generator, sending charge to the battery pack and electric motor, rather than driving the wheels directly.

Mazda

• Mazda EV

Mazda will launch its first battery-electric production car at Tokyo. Technical details are yet to be announced, but we expect it will use a powertrain similar to the e-TPV prototype with a 138bhp front-mounted electric motor, a single-speed transmission and a 35.5kWh battery pack. Range should be between 120 and 150 miles.

Mitsubishi

• Mitsubishi PHEV concept

Mitsubishi will join continue its electrification expansion with a new plug-in hybrid SUV concept. This is the only image the brand has released, which suggests the show car will feature a separated twin-pod cabin. Up front, expect a pair of LED headlights and a bold interpretation of Mitsubishi’s “dynamic shield” radiator grille and bumper design.

The Japanese brand says its new concept SUV will be powered by a “downsized plug-in hybrid EV powertrain” and an electric four-wheel-drive system.

The number of fatal accidents on Britain’s motorways rose by 19.4 per cent last year, with 92 fatal collisions resulting in the deaths of 107 people - up from 77 fatal accidents that saw 99 people lose their lives in 2017. The number of motorway accidents in which motorists sustained ‘serious’ injuries increased by 10 per cent over the same period. 

The figures - revealed in official data from the Department for Transport - reverse a trend that has seen the number of motorway fatalities fall in 2017 and 2016, and are in stark contrast to the overall fatal accident rate across Britain’s road network, which fell by 0.29 per cent last year.

Britain's most dangerous roads revealed

Highways England - the ‘government owned company’ responsible for the country’s motorway network - has come under intense pressure over the rollout of smart motorways, with a recently unearthed report revealing the risk of breaking down in an all-lane running motorway during off-peak hours is 216 per cent higher than breaking down on a conventional motorway. 

The organisation has long held that smart motorways are as safe if not safer than conventional motorways, citing evidence that the constant monitoring and variable speed limits smart motorways bring reduce the overall number of accidents. 

Smart motorways are also a cost-effective method of increasing motorway capacity, keeping drivers off higher-risk A roads. They allow for increased traffic flow in areas where motorway widening would be impossible or prohibitively expensive - for instance when the roads run close to railway lines or bodies of water. 

And, while both drivers and safety groups have said that motorways should always have hard shoulders, previous research has highlighted that 24 vehicles a week are collided with when parked hard shoulders, which one Highways England boss has described as “inhospitable”.

What is a smart motorway?

Nonetheless, these latest figures prompted Highways England to  admit that “there is still much more that needs to be done” with regard to motorway safety, and that the numbers were “very concerning.” The company added that “each incident is a tragedy for the individuals and the families involved.” 

Highways England reiterated its position, though, that “separate analysis of smart motorway all-lane running schemes continues to indicate that they are as safe as our wider motorway network.” 

Jack Cousens, head of roads policy for the AA, said: “The fact fatal incidents on British motorways rose by almost a fifth last year is depressingly tragic. We need to design and build the safest roads in the world, not ones ‘just as safe’ as their predecessors.

“Drivers feel uneasy on all lane running schemes, so much so that two thirds (66%) are only prepared to drive up to half a mile in search of an Emergency Refuge Area, before stopping in a live lane should they have a puncture.

“It seems that as more collisions occur where vulnerable vehicles are hit in live lanes, the more the public seems to distrust the concept of smart motorways.”

Future Alpine models will adopt electrification as the brand “cannot escape” the advances of the technology, according to Oliver Murguet, EVP Sales and Regions at Groupe Renault.

Speaking to Auto Express, Murguet admitted that despite Alpine’s focus on lightweight, back-to-basics sports cars, it will have to implement electrification into its next generation of models. “Electrification will be massive,” Murguet told us. “We have to intensify electrification. Alpine cannot escape.”

While Murguet wouldn’t give a timeframe on the introduction of electrification, nor what form it may take, it is clear that Alpine intends to significantly develop its product portfolio in the future. 

Up to now, Alpine has only one model: the A110. Implementing electrification would add weight, but any such car would counter the extra bulk with improved power and torque. However, Murguet didn’t seem to think this was particularly problematic, adding: “Look at Ferrari - even the latest Ferrari is [hybrid] electric.”

Despite the A110 weighing just 1,103kg, Murguet suggested that stripping a car bare didn’t necessarily tally with the brand’s mantra. “Alpine customers are asking for more sportiness, but also more cosiness,” he said.

Bosses have previously hinted at the idea of an Alpine-badged SUV. Although no such project has been confirmed the larger and heavier setup of a hybrid or electric powertrain would be a better fit for the more favourable packaging of such a model.

Jaguar's new design centre could see future models become more luxurious

Jaguars could be made even more luxurious in the future - and the newly appointed design director believes that the company’s new design facility could help the British brand to achieve this.

The new design centre, opened recently as part of a £500m investment in Jaguar Land Rover’s site at Gaydon, will greatly expand the capacity of the British premium brand to produce concepts and production cars. It features an extensive mixture of computer-aided graphics workstations and clay model platforms that feature up to 30 state-of-the-art milling machines; in contrast, Jaguar’s old facility at Whitley had just two. Significantly, it also brings the 280-odd design staff together in one building for the first time in Jaguar’s history.

Speaking at the official inauguration of the new site, Julian Thomson, who recently replaced Ian Callum as Jaguar design director, said the design centre could allow the brand to develop its ideas further, perhaps pushing it into even more luxurious designs.

“Maybe we could become even more Jaguar,” Thomson said. “There will be change for us as a brand but also changes in the customer market and the requirements and expectations of buyers. Perhaps Jaguar will become even more glamorous; the new design centre will allow us to turn the volume up to a whole new level.”

However, Jaguar’s head of exterior design, Adam Hatton, said that the facility would focus on perfecting existing models instead of exploring multiple possibilities for Jaguar to expand its range. “This doesn’t mean massive expansion of the model line-up,” he said. “It’ll speed up our processes and allow us to inject even more refinement into everything that we do.”
