New Toyota GR Supra 2.0 hits the UK, priced from £45,995

Toyota has expanded the GR Supra line-up in the UK with the introduction of a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder option, providing direct competition for the four-cylinder engine options offered in rivals such as the Jaguar F-Type and Porsche 718 Cayman

Prices start from £45,995 for the 2.0-litre Pro model, with a limited edition Fuji Speedway Edition model, capped at just 45 examples, priced from £47,395. Both are on sale now. 

The 2.0-litre Toyota Supra joins the 335bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder model already offered, and like the engine in that car, this new 2.0-litre unit is sourced from BMW - Toyota’s development partner for the fifth-generation Supra. 

Power stands at 254bhp with 400Nm torque, and drive is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic gearbox - there’s no word on a manual option just yet. Toyota claims 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds with launch control activated, while top speed is electronically limited to 155mph. 

With a smaller engine on board, Toyota says that the 2.0-litre GR Supra tips the scales 100kg lighter than the 3.0-litre car. In addition, the smaller engine doesn’t stretch out as far into the GR Supra’s nose, improving weight distribution.

It’s also more economical: Toyota claims 38.7mpg and 167g/km CO2 according to WLTP testing. Insurance groups are lower too, starting from group 34E. 

Under the bodywork the 2.0-litre Supra features the same electronically controlled active rear differential as is standard in 3.0-litre models. It also has the 3.0-litre’s adaptive damper system with Normal and Sport modes as standard, though it’s part of a suspension package re-tuned for the four-cylinder model’s smaller weight. The brakes are carried over for the GR Supra 2.0-litre Pro: Brembo discs front and rear with four-piston calipers on the front axle. 

Visually, all that separates the 2.0-litre Pro model from its 3.0-litre equivalent is a set of 18-inch wheels as standard and a slightly smaller chrome exhaust tip. The Pro trim level carries over almost unchanged, so standard equipment highlights include an 8.8-inch central touchscreen infotainment system and digital instrumentation, a reversing camera, heated Alcantara sports seats, automatic headlights, automatic wipers and climate control, plus cruise control with a speed limiter function.

On top of this, the GR Supra 2.0-litre Pro is equipped with Toyota’s Supra Safety+ suite of driver assistance and safety features. This includes pre-collision avoidance with cyclist and pedestrian detection, lane departure alert with steering intervention, automatic high-beam and road sign assistance. 

Buyers opting for the exclusive GR Supra Fuji Speedway Edition receive the same equipment, but unique styling and upholstery tweaks. It gets a metallic white paint finish with contrasting 19-inch black alloy wheels as standard, plus red door mirrors. Inside, there are carbon-fibre dashboard trim inserts and new swatches of red leather to contrast against the black Alcantara interior finish.
