GTO Engineering confirms production for project ‘Moderna’

Development of a new retro-styled hand-built sports car has been confirmed with UK-based Ferrari specialist GTO Engineering revealing its new car - codenamed project Moderna.

Having built up a reputation for servicing and restoring Ferraris, GTO Engineering is well acquainted with the Italian supercar maker, and judging by these final renders, you’d be forgiven for thinking this ‘new’ car is simply a recreation of the iconic Ferrari 250 GTO from the 1960s.

However, GTO Engineering keenly points out that its car is brand new from the ground up - including a naturally-aspirated quad-cam V12 engine built in-house.

Design touches like the ‘double-bubble’ roof, triple bonnet vents and quad-exit exhaust pipes are all clearly inspired by the iconic sixties sports car.

Similarities to Ferrari’s 250 GTO don’t stop at the exterior design and engine however, as project Moderna will have a manual gearbox. It should also be light because there’s a commitment to keep the car below 1,000kg, helped by the use of aluminium in the car’s subframe.

While no power output has been revealed for the V12 engine, if GTO Engineering retains its promise of a sub-1,000kg kerbweight then it could likely be faster than the Ferrari 250 GTO’s six-second 0-60mph time.

Order books for project Moderna have already opened and while pricing is yet to be revealed, it should at least be significantly cheaper than buying an original Ferrari 250 GTO.
