‘New year, same uncertainty, but revolutionary times’

News editor Jonathan Burn thinks 2019 is going to be a groundbreaking year in the car industry

Opinion - VW I.D.

While many things remain uncertain as we enter 2019, particularly in the UK’s political climate, the next 12 months in the car industry look set to be the most groundbreaking we’ve had for some time.

The industry has been shifting towards electrification for a number of years; Nissan and Renault have been the main protagonists, encouraging people to make the switch to e-mobility with the Leaf and ZOE respectively. While both are convincing alternatives to a petrol or diesel hatchback, they have always demanded some sort of compromise from buyers – on cost, range or quality.

However, 2019 could be the year that the electric car is no longer considered a left-field alternative to petrol or diesel but rather the first choice. An avalanche of new EVs will land in the coming months – from Volkswagen’s I.D. to the electric Vauxhall Corsa and the Kia e-Niro.

Affordability is at the core of all of these models, while promises of real-world ranges of up to 280 miles could mean the switch to an electric car is no longer a possibility for some people but an inevitability.

The mainstream brands launching EVs in 2019 won’t be alone, either; as there’s an influx of ‘disruptors’ on the horizon, specifically from the US and China, all aiming to have the ‘Tesla effect’ on the industry. New, exciting brands are increasingly common, but many struggle with the huge complexities that lie in making and selling cars. However, Rivian and NIO are two that seem to have a solid business plan.

Putting electric cars to one side for a moment, 2019 is also shaping up to be a crucial year for some big models. We’ll get new generations of two family favourites, the VW Golf and Skoda Octavia, over the next 12 months. So while 2019 may bring uncertain times, they’re certainly going to be interesting.

Used Kia Cee'd review

Used Kia Cee'd - front static
3 Jan, 2019 1:15pm Richard Dredge

A full used buyer’s guide on the Kia Cee’d covering the Cee’d Mk2 (2012-2018)

The all-new Kia Ceed recently reached showrooms. Not only has the firm dropped the apostrophe for this latest generation, prices for top-spec cars are now nudging £25,000. That’s a lot for a hatch made by a brand often seen as a budget choice. It’s great, but its predecessor was good, too, and you can buy one for less than £5,000.

Launched back in 2012, the second-generation Cee’d was a major improvement over its forebear and, incredibly, even the earliest of these cars still just about carry their original warranty. It’s a compact family hatch that appeals on so many levels, and while the sporty Cee’d GT won’t trouble its performance rivals, the regular models can give mainstream cars a run for their money.

Models covered

  • Kia Cee’d Mk2 (2012-2018) - Second-generation hatch offers style, kit and efficiency at low prices.

Kia Cee’d Mk2

History

The Cee’d Mk2 five-door hatch appeared in June 2012, then the three-door Pro_Cee’d arrived early in 2013. From the outset there were 1.4 or 1.6 petrol or diesel engines, with a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, and an automatic transmission as an option for the bigger units. The 1.6 CRDi got a conventional auto box, but the 1.6 GDi (petrol) has a dual-clutch set-up.

At launch there were five trim levels (1, 2, 3, 4 and 4 Tech). By September 2012 a Cee’d SW (estate) had joined the range with 1.4 or 1.6 diesel engines, then in April 2014 the Cee’d GT arrived, with a 201bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine.

A facelifted Cee’d arrived in October 2015 and had new driver aids, a GT-Line trim, recalibrated suspension and steering. A 1.0 turbo petrol engine also appeared.

Which one should I buy?

If you want sparkling performance, avoid the naturally aspirated 1.4 and 1.6 petrol engines, which feel less than muscular; the diesels and 1.0 turbo petrol are more zesty.

All Cee’ds have air-con as well as heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, front electric windows, a multifunction steering wheel, Bluetooth and a cooled glovebox. The Cee’d 2 adds 16-inch alloys, electrically folding door mirrors, powered rear windows, cruise control and reversing sensors.

Move up to the Cee’d 3, and it’ll come with privacy glass, automatic lights, dual-zone climate control, touchscreen sat-nav and a reversing camera, while 4 spec adds 17-inch wheels, leather trim and a heated steering wheel. 4 Tech gets a panoramic roof, xenon lights and front parking sensors. The 2-based GT-Line has sportier detailing inside and out.

Alternatives to the Kia Cee’d Mk2

The Vauxhall Astra is great value, and offers loads of engines and trims. It looks smart, too, but is uninspiring to drive.

A Ford Focus is more fun; it’s also excellent value and there are loads on the used market. Again, buyers have lots of engines and trims to choose between.

Perhaps the best all-rounder is the VW Golf, but next to the Kia it is costly. The Mazda 3 looks smart, is great to drive, nicely built and well equipped.

The Peugeot 308 Mk2 (from 2014) offers great value, low running costs and excellent practicality. You’d be wise to have a look at the Hyundai i30 and Honda Civic, too.

What to look for:

Battery

Many Cee’ds are fitted with stop/start (ISG). It can be slow to work, usually because the battery is low on charge.

Condensation

When it’s cold, some examples of the Cee’d suffer from condensation on the inside of the windows, and poor demisting.

DRL failure

The car’s LED daytime running lights are known to fail sometimes, and replacement of the unit under warranty is generally the solution.

Headlights

The headlights can flicker at times, usually when switched to automatic mode – but it can happen in manual mode, too.

Interior

Across the range, you’ll find a steering wheel that’s adjustable for both reach and rake fitted to the Cee’d as standard, along with a height-adjustable driver’s seat. Throw in supportive seats, high-quality materials plus a clean design and this Kia is very easy to live with. With a 380-litre boot (or up to 1,318 litres with the rear seats folded), the Cee’d is without doubt a practical car as well.

Prices

You can buy a nearly new Kia Cee’d Mk2 for between £6,850 and £23,995 on our sister site BuyaCar.

Running costs

Most Cee’ds are bought with a transferable plan called Kia Care, providing servicing for three to five years on any Kia up to its fifth birthday.

If no service plan is in place, the first four diesel services cost £69, £219, £69 and £299; for petrol-engined cars these are £139, £199, £139 and £249.

All engines have a timing chain. Fresh brake fluid is required every two years (at £50) while the coolant lasts 10 years or 100,000-120,000 miles.

Recalls

Remarkably, the Cee’d Mk2 has had no recalls. Even more so, the original Cee’d, launched in 2007, has a similarly unblemished recall record. In fact, since 2012, Kia has issued just eight recalls across its entire model range. However, one of these recalls affected most of the cars in Kia’s line-up, which could suffer from a faulty brake light switch.

Driver Power owner satisfaction

The Cee’d Mk2 came 30th in this year’s Auto Express Driver Power used car survey and 61st in the new car poll. In the latter the stand-out rating it earned was for practicality, but the Kia is unexceptional in other categories. In the used car survey, once again the Cee’d doesn’t stand out anywhere but it scores well in most areas; the exterior gets the lowest ranking.

As Kia has moved upmarket in recent years, the desirability of its cars has increased – along with the prices. But sales have stayed strong, which is no surprise because Kia still produces some of the best-value cars in each of the segments in which it competes, and some of the most reliable. The Cee’d is a perfect case in point because it comes with more kit than many of its rivals but costs less. Factor in a high-quality interior, some very good engines and transmissions, plus a spacious cabin and big boot, and it’s easy to see why the Mk2 Cee’d range has been such a hit.

MoT rules could be toughened up to address outstanding safety recalls

http://bit.ly/2BWBVmL

Hugo Griffiths 2019-01-03 10:35

DVSA plans to work with Department for Transport “to determine how the MoT system can be adjusted to cover outstanding safety recalls”

BMW recall fix

It was only last May that the MoT system saw one of the biggest updates in its near-60-year history, but safety chiefs are looking to toughen it up again to address the 2.39 million UK cars that are subject to an outstanding safety recall.

Carmakers regularly issue safety recalls for their vehicles, addressing everything from faulty seatbelts and airbags, to fire risks and engine cut-out problems. While it is illegal for dealers to sell cars with outstanding recall work, there is no legal mandate for owners to get dangerous faults fixed. The DVSA launched an online recall checker tool in February 2018 but, despite this, an estimated one in 13 cars in the UK is subject to an outstanding recall.

Car recalls: what should you do if you get one

To address this issue and reduce the number of potentially dangerous cars on our roads, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, which manages both the MoT test and the recall process, is investigating whether the two systems can be aligned.

Neil Barlow, the DVSA’s head of vehicle engineering, told Auto Express the organisation plans to “work with the Department for Transport to determine how the MoT system can be adjusted to cover outstanding safety recalls in the future.” Barlow added: “it would make logical sense where appropriate for the MOT to be aligned with the safety recalls system”.

Such an alignment is no simple matter, however, for both practical reasons and issues of fairness. If a motorist receives a recall notice the day before their car is due its MoT, for example, would it be reasonable that the car should fail?

“DVSA has to also ensure that motorists have fair warning of newly added recalls”, Barlow says, adding consumers should be given “reasonable time” to get faults fixed.

One model believed to be under consideration is the German equivalent to the MoT, which sees owners given a warning if their car has an outstanding recall when tested; if the recall is not attended to by the time the car is retested, the car fails its next roadworthiness assessment. While this model offers a promising solution, Barlow warns “changes will need to made to legislation” if the MoT and recall systems are to be aligned.

Another issue is understood to do with the government’s own software systems. The recall database and the MoT database are two separate entities, and migrating them to talk to each other would be a significant task, as would keeping them updated in a timely fashion. “Work will need to take place to minimise the time between the repair being carried out and a database being updated”, Barlow explained. The DVSA would also need to ensure manufacturers “harmonise” the way they record safety recalls “so that all vehicle types are covered”, he added.

A spokesman for Vauxhall, which recalled Zafiras built between 2005 and 2014 over concerns a faulty heating and ventilation component could lead to fire, told Auto Express recalls can be difficult to enact “if a change of ownership is involved, or if owners persistently ignore our letters”.

BMW, meanwhile, told us it has introduced mobile technicians to carry out repair work on the 2004 to 2011 3 Series, and has also set up drop-in centres at Westfield shopping centre so owners can get their cars fixed while they shop.

Edmund King, president of the AA, told Auto Express that “generally the recall system in the UK works quite well”, though he said it “sometimes goes wrong with change of ownership or non-notification of change of address.”

To address this, King considers “the MoT system should be used to flag up to owners recalls that haven’t been acted on, as advisory notifications”. He also saw merit in the German system, adding recalls “should only lead to an automatic fail if the recall fault is a major safety risk or has already been flagged up at a previous MoT.”

Drivers wanting to find out if a car is subject to a recall notice can enter a registration number into: check-mot.service.gov.uk.

Volkswagen previews portable EV charging station

http://bit.ly/2SD3qJn

Jonathan Burn 2019-01-02 13:00

VW's new mobile EV charging stations will roll out in Wolfsburg over the next six months, before the scheme extends to other German cities

VW has announced plans to introduce a fleet of portable EV charging stations in a bid to strengthen and broaden the network of charging points across Europe.

The pilot scheme will begin in the first half of the year in Wolfsburg, Germany and extend to other cities during 2020. VW has not confirmed the locations of the other sites.

Best electric cars on sale

Previewed by VW’s own illustrations, the 360kWh mobile charging station has the capacity to charge 15 e-Golfs to an 80 per cent capacity. Thanks to DC quick charging of up to 100kW the German firm claims such a recharge takes only 17 minutes.

The station operates independently of a power source allowing it to be placed in a variety of locations such as temporary car parks and building sites. Once the station’s power pack has dropped below 20 per cent capacity the station is replaced automatically with a new one.

Alternatively the station can also be hooked up to a 30kW power supply that enables the station to recharge itself. On top of this the stations also allow temporary storage of renewable energy such as solar or wind power, in effect, enabling CO2-neutral mobility.

New 2019 Mercedes-AMG CLA 35 and CLA 45 spied testing

Hot Mercedes-AMG CLA models, set to rival the Audi S3 and RS3 saloon, spotted testing ahead of 2019 reveal

Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 driving

Mercedes-AMG is working on two hot versions of the CLA compact saloon that will be at dealers before the end of the year. These spy shots of two different test cars show that both a CLA 35 and full-fat 45 will take the fight to the four door versions of the Audi S3 and RS3 when they go on sale in late 2019.

Essentially a booterd version of the A-Class, the CLA sports styling that will bear a close resemblance to its hatchback relative, with the only major change coming at the rear. The new fastback shape is topped off with a large lip spoiler on the trailing edge of the boot lid, while additional downforce is generated through a large rear diffuser.

New Mercedes-AMG A45: everything you need to know

Though both test mules wear a full body camouflage, there are subtle differences that separate the two. The CLA 45 - most obviously distinguishable in these shots through the bright yellow paint peeking out from beneath the camo - features more aggressive bumpers front and rear, wider wheel arches and four exhaust tips to the 35’s two.

Mechanically, the pair will be identical to their A-Class counterparts. That means the CLA 35 will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine sending its 302bhp and 400Nm to all four wheels. Stats for the CLA 45 are still to be confirmed, but it’s expected to produce over 400bhp from the same 2.0-litre capacity. It'll likely achieve its performance with the help of hybrid assistance - the brand's EQ Boost tech will be used to help all but eliminate turbo lag.

The outgoing CLA 45 accelerated from 0-62mph in 4.2 seconds with ‘just’ 376bhp on tap, so expect the new version to get close to potentially dip below the four second mark.

The Mercedes-AMG A35 is priced from £35,580. The previous generation CLA carried roughly a £4,000 premium over the equivalent A-Class, so expect the CLA 35 to kick off from close to £40,000. The 45 will be pricier still, with a circa-£49,000 tag likely.

Revised 2019 Mazda CX-5 gains new GT Sport Nav+ trim

http://bit.ly/2s4QXlN

Alex Ingram 2019-01-02 10:50

Updates for 2019 see the Mazda CX-5 crossover benefit from smartphone connectivity and revised suspension settings

2019 Mazda CX-5 - front cornering

The Mazda CX-5 SUV has gained a series of revisions for 2019, including the addition of a new range-topping GT Sport Nav+ trim.

The new trim sits above the existing Sport Nav+ and comes loaded with extra standard kit, such as 19-inch alloy wheels, a 7-inch colour display between the dials, a higher grade of leather trim for seats - which gain ventilation in the front and heating in the back - and LED ambient lighting. Cosmetic upgrades inside include a mix of wood and satin chrome trim inlays, a new steering wheel with unique stitching and chrome trim, black roof lining, and a frameless rear view mirror.

Best crossovers currently on sale

The CX-5’s safety pack, offered optionally in lesser models, is standard on the GT Sport Nav+. That means adaptive LED headlights, a driver attention alert system, rear smart city brake support and a 360 surround view camera are all included.

In addition to the new trim level, every revised CX-5 now gains both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. All CX-5s get a dual climate control system - adjusted through an updated control panel - as standard.

Sport Nav+ models now get a reversing camera, electric driver’s seat, keyless entry, heated front seats and steering wheel, a head-up display and a powered tailgate.

The CX-5 is one of the sharpest cars to drive in its class, but Mazda has tried to improve its dynamics further with a series of suspension modifications. The changes include a thicker front and smaller rear anti-roll bars, new front stabiliser bushes, rear damper top mounts and tweaked damper valves. Combined with an updated yaw control system, it’s claimed to make the CX-5 both sharper to drive and more stable.

Power comes from an unchanged engine line-up which features a 163bhp petrol engine and two diesel engines, making 148bhp and 181bhp respectively. All models are offered with a choice of manual and automatic gearboxes, though buyers looking for four-wheel drive are limited to the most powerful diesel.

The updated 2019 CX-5 is available to order now, with prices starting from £25,595 and climbing to £37,195.
