The all-new Honda Jazz has been caught on camera for the first time ahead of its official reveal at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show.
Even under the heavy camouflage, it’s evident the hatchback’s styling has evolved substantially. It’s more curvaceous than the outgoing model, ditching its angular bumper and sharp headlights for rounder replacements. At the rear, the Jazz gets new tail lights, a reshaped tailgate and a less aggressive diffuser.
We expect the new Honda Jazz will share its underpinnings with the recently-refreshed HR-V crossover and, like the current model, the only engines offered will be small, efficient petrol units. Likely contenders include the 127bhp 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder from the Civic or the 128bhp 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated four-cylinder from the HR-V.
No diesel engines are expected to feature in the new line-up, keeping in-line with the current supermini market trend towards small capacity petrol engines. Like the current model, buyer should also be given the choice of either a manual or automatic gearbox.
Honda recently confirmed its plans to electrify its entire range by 2025, spearheading its campaign with the all-new, all-electric e Prototype. As such, it’s very likely that the new Jazz will feature some form of hybrid powertrain, potentially borrowing technology from the firm’s i-MMD system used in the latest CR-V.
If so, the hybrid system will use a far smaller combustion engine than found in the CR-V, with capacity likely being capped at around 1,500cc. The engine will be mated to a CVT which houses an integrated electric motor, with the system feeding its power to the front wheels.
The Jazz’s interior will likely be a melting pot of switchgear and technology borrowed from elsewhere in Honda’s line-up, using the same seven-inch infotainment system as the Civic.
