The Japanese brand’s first all-electric vehicle will be unveiled later this month at the Guangzhou Motor Show, China

Lexus electric teaser

Lexus will unveil its first all-electric vehicle on 22 November at the Guangzhou International Motor Show in China. We expect it will reach the global marketplace next year, where it will act as a rival to the MG ZS EV, Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona electric.

Lexus is yet to confirm any technical specifications for its new electric vehicle, but we expect that it will be a battery-powered version of the UX. The compact SUV is based on Toyota’s TNGA underpinnings, which it shares with the Toyota C-HR. The platform already offers support for mild-hybrid drive and an electrified rear axle.

We expect the EV to feature battery pack situation in the floor of the car. Given the UX sits as Lexus’s entry-level model, it’s likely that the EV will feature on electric motor on the front axle to keep costs down. However, the flexibility of the platform should allow for an additional rear-mounted motor for four-wheel drive if desired.

Range and charging details also remain under wraps but, in order to be competitive against rivals such as the Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona electric, the Lexus EV will need a minimum WLTP range of around 200 miles.
