Volkswagen has released official design sketches of the next-generation Caddy. The German brand’s forthcoming light commercial vehicle is due for launch in 2020 and it looks set to adopt a radical redesign, with a handful of sporty styling cues lifted from the recently released eighth-generation Golf.

Naturally, design elements like the enormous alloy wheels and aggressive front bumper will be toned down for the production version. However, the rest of the Caddy’s styling should remain faithful to these renders, with a slightly sloping roofline, fresh LED headlamps, new L-shaped LED tail lights, a larger rear window and a narrower radiator grille.

A larger version of the German brand’s updated badge will feature on the van’s nose and tail. In response to customer demand, Volkswagen says the new Caddy will also be offered with a solid tailgate, while dual rear swing doors will be available as an optional extra.

Like the new Golf, the fourth-generation Caddy will use Volkswagen’s recently updated MQB underpinnings, which means it should also adopt the Golf’s 113bhp and 148bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engines. Both powertrains will send power to the front wheels via either a six-speed manual or seven-speed automatic gearbox.

The platform-sharing exercise means the new Caddy should use the Mk8 Golf’s dash and infotainment system, which offers support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Buyers will also likely receive the new Golf’s comprehensive range of safety equipment, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and park assist.
