The Fiat 500 and Fiat Panda city cars get new mild hybrid engine option for the first time

Fiat has added a new mild hybrid powertrain option to both its 500 city car and Panda crossover line-ups.

Both models make use of a new 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine that now features a 12-volt belt starter generator (BSG) electric motor and small lithium-ion battery. Total power output for both models stands at 70bhp and 92Nm of torque. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard on both models.

Fiat says compared to the outgoing 1.2-litre unit, the new mild hybrid engine improves fuel efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions by up to 30 per cent on the road.

The BSG system is able to recover lost energy under braking and deceleration and store it in the lithium-ion battery. That energy can then be used to restart the engine in Stop&Start mode and aid acceleration at speeds.

The system also allows the engine to shut off below speeds of 18mph and cruise to a stop, which helps further reduce fuel consumption.

The 500 Mild Hybrid and the Panda Mild Hybrid go on sale in February and March respectively.
