Citroen is readying itself to take part in a PSA Group wide electrification push, with the French firm’s boss revealing that a broad selection of Citroen models will be available with fully electric and plug-in hybrid powertrains early in the next decade.

At the launch of the newly facelifted C4 Cactus hatchback, Citroen CEO Linda Jackson told Auto Express: “From 2023, 80 per cent of our vehicles will be electrified or PHEV [plug-in hybrid electric vehicles].”

The details are still thin on the ground, and it’s unclear just how many all-electric and plug-in hybrid models could be offered in Europe, especially given that the Citroen boss cited Chinese demand for plug-in vehicles as the catalyst for an electric product rollout.

“In China they’ve gone down the electric route, so you’ve got to be present with PHEV and electrification”, Jackson explained.

One car that looks certain to feature electrification will be the firm’s next-generation D-segment saloon, which has been in development for around three years now. Asked if the new flagship - which will replace the current generation C5 - could feature electrification, Jackson replied: “Yes, absolutely”.

At the heart of the product rollout will be a new platform currently being developed in partnership with China’s Dongfeng Motors. In May 2016, PSA announced an agreement between the two parties to develop a new all-electric architecture, which is based on PSA’s Common Modular Platform.

The future electric platform is known as e-CMP, and will support a range of all-electric B and C segment models from the Citroen, DS, Peugeot and Dongfeng brands. The first vehicle using e-CMP due to arrive on sale in 2019.
