Ferrari has launched the Ferrari 488 Pista Spider at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance

Ferrari chose California’s super-exclusive Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance car show to pull the covers from the convertible version of its 488 Pista supercar. The Ferrari 488 Pista Spider imposes the track-focused performance modifications from the 488 Pista coupe on to the 488 Spider’s drop-top configuration to create what is, in fact, the 50th factory-built convertible Ferrari has created in its history.

Like the hard-top, the Pista Spider gets a 710bhp version of Ferrari’s 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8 that generates its 770Nm maximum torque at 3,000rpm. It enables a 0-62mph time of 2.85s and a 211mph top speed, both figures identical to those of the hard-top car. Ferrari also quotes a 0-124mph time of 8 seconds dead.

Weighing-in at 1,380kg, the 488 Pista Spider is 100kg heavier than the coupe version thanks mainly to its folding roof mechanism but it still has a 50kg weight advantage over that standard 488 GTB coupe because it features the weight-saving modifications unique to the hardcore Pista cars.

As with the Pista coupe, the Pista Spider uses a chassis that draws heavily from the Ferrari 488 Challenge and GTE racing cars while motorsport technology is also evident in the engine bay. A special lightweight crankshaft, titanium condos and and exhaust manifold fashioned from Inconel all help cut weight and boost performance.

Beneath the retractable canopy lifted from the standard 488 Spider, the Pista Spider’s interior adopts a paired-back, focused approach with the expected abundance of carbonfibre and aluminium foot plates in place of carpets. The car was launched with new 20” 10-spoke wheels but Ferrari is offering one-piece carbonfibre items that give a 20% weight reduction to those with deep enough pockets.
