The Swedish brand's family of '90' models get a new 247bhp 2.0-litre petrol with familiar T5 branding

Volvo has introduced a new T5 petrol engine to its largest ‘90’ family of models. The S90, V90 and XC90 all benefit from the new unit - which is available to order now - as the Swedish brand continues to move away from diesel and towards petrol and electrification.

The 2.0-litre, four cylinder unit is part of Volvo’s Drive-E engine range, which features extensive use of aluminium in its construction. The T5 has been used in the XC60 for some time, and in its new applications it makes the same 247bhp and 350Nm of torque.

In the S90 and V90, the T5 sits near the top of the petrol range, below only the T8 plug-in hybrid. In the saloon, the T5 delivers a 0-62mph time of 6.8 seconds, while the estate-bodied V90 comes in two tenths behind. Both send power to the front wheels and, as with all ‘90’ T5 models, is equipped with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The S90 is claimed to achieve 42.8mpg and emits 154g/km of CO2 on the new WLTP testing procedure, while the V90 manages 41.5mpg and 157g/km. Both are available in R Design and Inscription trims (and their Pro variations), but not the entry-level Momentum or Momentum Pro. The S90 T5 starts from £41,120 in R Design trim, while the V90 T5 R Design costs £43,120.

The V90 Cross Country T5 is priced from £44,685. The high-riding, chunky-cladded version of the V90 sends its power to all four wheels, resulting in a 7.4-second 0-62mph time. It’s slightly thirstier than the standard V90, achieving 38.2mph and 172g/km in official tests.

The XC90 is the largest model in the 90 family, and as a result the performance of the T5 takes a slight hit. Here, the T5 achieves a 7.9 second 0-62mph time, while fuel economy and emissions stand at 35.8mpg and 184g/km respectively. The T5 unit marks a new entry point to the XC90’s petrol range, sitting below the existing T6 unit. It’s priced at £50,435 for in Momentum trim, rising to £59,235 in Inscription Pro, making it £3,500 cheaper than the T6 like-for-like.
