Mercedes has released an official teaser image for its second-generation CLA fastback saloon. The shadowy image shows the new model’s side profile, which is more coupĂ©-like than its predecessor.
Our spy photographers recently snapped a CLA test mule undergoing winter testing, giving us a glimpse of the production car’s design before its launch early next year. The shots reveal a front end that features a new honeycomb grille and updated headlamps, both of which look strikingly similar to the larger CLS.
The CLA mule also featured a coupĂ©-like profile, with its roofline swooping down towards the boot lid. Its tail-lights also bear plenty of resemblance to the larger CLS, suggesting Mercedes will use the tried-and-tested “Russian Doll” approach with its CLA.
Mercedes is yet to confirm the new CLA’s engine-range but, like the outgoing model, it’s expected to share its powertrains with the A-Class. This Mk2 model will likely have some form of mild hybrid powertrain, along with a range petrol and diesel variants, all of which will be borrowed from the recently-revised A-Class range. A hot AMG 45 variant will debut later, likely with upwards of 400bhp, leaving room for a lesser-powered AMG 35 model.
The latest CLA will also undergo a radical interior overhaul, ushering in Mercedes’s new twin-screen infotainment system, as seen on the latest A-Class. Also like the new A-Class, interior quality should improve, with Mercedes’s latest range of switchgear and materials being transplanted into the CLA.
