The AI:TRAIL quattro concept showcases Audi's vision of future 4x4s

Audi has released a teaser image of the AI:TRAIL quattro: a concept car that gives a glimpse of how 4x4s might evolve in the distant future.

The render shows the AI:TRAIL in profile, and it’s off-road bias is clear: the concept has no front and rear overhangs at all, which should enable huge approach and departure angles while covering tough terrain. Combined with the raised suspension and huge wheel and tyre combination, the concept should be virtually unstoppable off-road.

A lack of a traditional combustion engine - the AI:TRAIL is electric - means that the remaining bodywork is almost entirely dedicated to the cabin, which should allow for plenty of interior space for the occupants. The AI:TRAIL’s four doors are constructed mostly from glass, as the side windows cut deep into the car’s flanks.

The AI:TRAIL is the fourth in a series of design studies from the Ingolstadt brand. The AICON, a 2+2 four door coupe with a lounge style interior was the first to be revealed back in 2017. This was followed by the PB18: a spectacular preview of an all-electric supercar which boasted a 0-62mph time of around two seconds.

The AI:ME was the third model in the series to be revealed; its Shanghai Motor Show debut intended to show the car’s potential for use in megacities of the future.

As with the other AI models, the AI:TRAIL is a vision of how the brands products might look well into the decades to come, rather than a sneak peak at any prospective new models due in the next couple of years. The concept will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, and will be on display alongside the other three concepts, as well as the full Audi model range.
