German BMW tuning specialist, Alpina, will unwrap a fettled version of the new 3 Series estate at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Like the old Alpina B3, this tweaked Touring model will feature a pair of subtly restyled bumpers, a tuned engine and a range of chassis upgrades.
Our spy photographers recently snapped an Alpina B3 saloon tackling its on-road handling assessment. The development mule wore a mildly tweaked body kit, larger quad-exit exhausts and a re-profiled boot lid with a lip spoiler. Similar cosmetic upgrades will feature on the estate, along with the tuning firm’s trademark, oversized, multi-spoke alloy wheels.

The B3 Touring will feature the same turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine as the standard BMW M340i, albeit with a range of performance upgrades. The BMW’s powertrain develops 369bhp and 500Nm of torque, so expect the Alpina to develop well in excess of 400bhp and 600Nm.
Alpina’s old B3 Biturbo featured a pair of unique turbochargers, a freer-flowing exhaust system and an ECU remap, with similar revisions expected for this new model. It was offered in two states of tune; the “standard” version produced 404bhp, while the more potent “S” variant developed 433bhp.
As with the B3 saloon, the new Alpina B3 Touring will feature a range of chassis upgrades. Likely additions will include a set of uprated dampers, stiffer springs and larger brakes, which we expect will be tailored towards everyday comfort and usability rather than outright handling.
Further specifications for the Alpina B3 Touring will be announced shortly after the car’s unveiling at the Frankfurt show. UK sales are expected to commence in 2020, with prices starting from around £60,000.
