Facelifted versions of the all-electric Smart EQ ForTwo and EQ ForFour have been revealed. The revised range will be introduced at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, before going on sale this December. Prices will start from around £24,000, with first deliveries expected in Spring 2020.
Smart’s owner Mercedes says both models have received a “reduced and grown-up” cosmetic overhaul. Revisions are fairly minor, stretching to a larger honeycomb radiator grille, fresh fog lamps, more aggressive air ducts for the front bumper and a pair of reworked LED headlights.

Both models receive a more aerodynamically efficient, smoothed-over bonnet, while the rears feature a new diffuser, updated light units and a tweaked spoiler. Like the current model, the Smart EQ ForTwo is available in both hardtop and cabriolet body styles.
Inside, all three Smart EQ models benefit from a redesigned centre console with new cupholders and a smartphone storage compartment, as well as a fresh eight-inch infotainment system. The new screen relies on the computing power of the driver’s smartphone, sharing its menu design, applications and navigation system.
Smart offers three trim levels across its new EQ range. The entry-level “Advanced” model features parking sensors and a driver’s armrest. Mid-range “Premium” models get a panoramic glass roof (or a draught stop for the EQ ForTwo Cabriolet), a reversing camera and a storage net for the centre console.
The range-topping “Exclusive” models come with full LED lights front and rear, rain-sensing windscreen wipers, automatic headlamps, an automatically dimming rear-view mirror, ambient interior lighting and improved fog lamps with a cornering function.
Buyers will also be able to choose from a broader range of customisation options, too, with the new Smart EQ range receiving fresh paint colours, new upholstery patterns, additional interior trim colours and a choice of four alloy wheel designs, with either 15- or 16-inch diameters.
The new Smart EQ control app also allows owners to check the status of their vehicles remotely, providing information on the car’s range, battery-charge level, and location, as well as offering the option of setting the car’s climate control and remotely operating its central locking.
A range of new connected services will also be introduced on the facelifted Smart EQ range, most of which are operated from the owner’s smartphone. Features include a car-sharing function, parking-space search, a theft-recovery system and the ability to route-plan to where the vehicle is parked.
Smart’s all-electric drivetrain remains unchanged. All models get a 17.6kWh battery pack and a rear-mounted electric motor, with an output of 80bhp and 160Nm of torque. All three models have a top speed of 81mph and a claimed 0–62mph time of around 12 seconds.
All Smart EQ models now offer support for 22kW fast charging, enabling a charge from 10 to 80 percent capacity in less than 40 minutes. The EQ ForTwo has a claimed range of 91 miles, while the EQ ForTwo Cabriolet and EQ ForFour offer respective ranges of 90 miles and 87 miles.
