Porsche bosses have revealed that a fully electric successor to the 718 Cayman is currently the favoured option within the company, and that an official decision on the car will be made within the next 12 months.
The German firm wants 50 per cent of its sales to be made up of electric or electrified cars by 2025. The Porsche Taycan is the brand’s first EV, while a fully electric Macan is scheduled to arrive by 2022.
Now Porsche bosses are turning their attention to electrifying the company’s range of sports cars, and the next-generation 718 Cayman looks set to make the switch to fully electric.
“In the sports car segment we have to think about a pure electric car. An [electric] 911 will be too difficult,” Lutz Meschke, Porsche deputy chairman told Auto Express. “But for the 718 I think that it would be a very good step for the future and it would be on a completely new platform that we can discuss and share with other brands.”
Despite SUV sales dominating Porsche’s sales charts, Lutz said that it is important for Porsche to preserve its position in the market of developing class-leading sports cars, even if they are electric. Lutz added: “A pure-electric sports car would not only be important for China but also Europe and USA markets, as sports cars are the heart of our brands and we cannot sit only on SUV cars. We have to do something in the direction of our sports cars and I think the 718 is the right direction.”
Prototypes testing “different battery concepts” and “body styles” are currently undergoing final assessment within Porsche before an ‘official’ decision is made. “We are still in the concept period for the [next] 718 Cayman,” Oliver Blume, Porsche CEO told us, “but in the next 12 months we will decide whether to go right or to go left.”
