Mercedes has bolstered the brand new Mercedes GLE SUV line-up with the arrival of a plug-in hybrid model. Called GLE 350 de, it marries diesel grunt and efficiency with electric running, and it’ll be on UK roads early next year.
It’s one of 20 new plug-in hybrid models due from Mercedes by the end of 2020. Alongside its new line-up of EQ branded all-electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid technology will be adopted across the entire conventional line-up.

The GLE is the largest member of the new ‘EQ Power’ plug-in hybrid family, and it arrives with a large battery too. Working alongside a 191bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel engine is a 31.2kWh battery, sending power to an electric motor rated at 134bhp. Total system power stands at 315bhp with 700Nm torque, with Mercedes claiming 0-62mph in 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 130mph.
More importantly though, the size of the battery means that the new GLE is capable of running on electric power only for 62 miles, according to WLTP recorded figures. Top speed in all-electric mode is 99mph, while Mercedes claims fuel economy of 256.8mpg with an official combined CO2 figure of 29g/km.
Charging is covered by a combined charging socket located on the right rear wheel arch, opposite to the fuel filler. Mercedes claims that a DC rapid charger can top the battery up from 10 to 80 per cent in approximately 20 minutes.
Mercedes also claims that the integration of the large battery does not affect the boot floor, with the rear axle modified to accommodate the battery pouch. As such, the GLE 350 de still fields of 1,915-litres of space with the rear bench folded flat. The exterior design does not change over the non-electrified versions of the GLE line-up.
