All of the deals are Personal Contract Purchase (PCP) schemes, so you’ll pay a deposit and a set number of monthly payments. When you’ve paid the last of these monthly instalments the contract comes to an end, and you’ll have the option of paying a final lump sum to take ownership of the car. Alternatively, you can use the car’s remaining value to trade-in for a new model, or you can hand the keys back to the dealer and part ways.

Skoda got clever with the Scala by stretching the VW Group’s small-car platform to a size where it could underpin a larger model. The result is a belter of a family car, with decent space in the cabin, a generous boot and strong kit levels.
It isn’t perhaps the most thrilling drive in the market, but the Scala is composed and comfy when it matters. Our preferred engine, the 1.0 TSI with 113bhp, is quick enough for most uses, even when the car is fully loaded. SE trim level brings lots of kit, too, including an infotainment system that’s up there with the best in the market. It all adds up to a great-value offering that is, right now, our favourite family car.

The Citroen C3 oozes personality, with its cheeky design and those rubberised Airbumps that run along the doors. Inside, the C3 has an uncluttered dashboard, with almost all the buttons moved to the touchscreen. But frustratingly, that also includes the climate controls.
Even so, you’ll forgive the car a few foibles because it’s so different from much of the norm in the class. And where the C3 scores big is on practicality – its boot remains one of the largest in the class – and personality. It’s Britain’s biggest-selling car year in, year out – and it’s not hard to understand why. The Fiesta blends superb driving dynamics with comfort and efficiency, regardless of which version of the 1.0-litre three-cylinder EcoBoost engine you choose. All are better than the 1.1-litre engines formerly the entry point to the range, while a pair of 1.5-litre diesels promise as much as 88.3mpg for drivers needing long-distance efficiency.
Unusual these days is the fact that there are three and five-door bodystyles available across the range, so buyers can prioritise looks or practicality. Tech and interior quality is good, but now that Zetec trim has been dropped, there’s a big gap between the entry-level Trend trim and the well-appointed Titanium – the model that we recommend.

Mazda’s range of SUVs was bolstered last year with the addition of a brand-new compact crossover badged CX-30.
It sits between the CX-3 and CX-5, but is more of a hatchback on stilts than a fully-fledged SUV. That helps the CX-30 to drive beautifully, with sharp handling and a comfortable ride. The interior feels luxurious, although a family of four might struggle to get comfortable.
Like the rest of the Mazda range, the crossover uses relatively large 2.0-litre naturally aspirated engines – with a mild-hybrid system in this car. It’s smooth, but you’ll need to push it to get the best out of it. A perfect case of try before you buy.
