Another performance Golf is waiting in the wings: it’s the all-new GTD. VW has released a teaser image ahead of the car’s official debut at next month’s Geneva Motor Show.
The image shows the GTD will feature LED spotlights housed within the front bumper as well as a light strip that connects the two headlamps. It’s a design theme that features on the already-revealed GTE plug-in hybrid, as well as upcoming GTI, to mark out performance variants in the Mk8 Golf range.

VW is keeping detailed technical data on the GTD under wraps until the car’s official debut at Geneva, but the firm has said that it will make use of the “most powerful and cleanest’ turbodiesel engine ever used in a Golf. The firm goes on to say that a new twin SCR (selective catalytic reduction) with double-AdBlue injection will also feature to help reduce NOx emissions over the outgoing model.
The outgoing GTD is powered by a 182bhp 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel engine. Expect power from the newcomer to rise closer to the 200bhp mark. Like before, the GTD will be front-drive only and offered with the option of a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed DSG automatic gearbox.
Alongside the GTD at Geneva, VW will also pull the wraps off the new Golf GTI. Both cars will go on sale in the middle of the year.
