The all-new compact DS SUV has been spied undergoing a cold-weather shakedown. It’s our first glimpse of French premium brand's next SUV

DS will expand its SUV offering with an all-new crossover that will slot in between the baby DS 3 Crossback and flagship DS 7 Crossback, and to prove it we've already caught the newcomer on camera for the very first time.

Set to be introduced to the UK market in 2021, this new crossover is larger in size than the DS 3 Crossback and will be a more natural rival for posh SUVs like the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Mercedes GLA and the Volvo XC40.

Best small SUVs and crossovers to buy

DS has marketed a car of this size before, in the form of the DS 4. As such, this new addition could well take on the name DS 4 Crossback.

Looking more like a jacked-up hatch than a fully-fledged SUV, the DS 4 Crossback is set to major in style – not that you can tell from the heavily camouflaged mule that we caught undergoing testing of its ESP stability control system with DS' technical partner Bosch. Look closely though and, despite the comprehensive wrap, you can spot the DS brand's trademark real matrix LED lamps tail lamps.

Similar in size to its German and Swedish alternatives, the DS 4 Crossback is set to be based on the PSA Group's EMP2 platform – the same platform the bigger DS 7 sits on.

Since it has much in common with the flagship DS 7, we expect the DS 4 Crossback to share most of the bigger SUV's engine line-up, including its advanced E-Tense plug-in hybrid powertrain.

That means, on the petrol side, the engine range will kick off with a small 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder and expand to include a larger 1.6-litre four-cylinder turbo that could produce around 220bhp.

Combining both power and efficiency, the DS 4 Crossback is also set to come with a powerful plug-in hybrid powertrain that is likely to mirror the DS 7 set-up, combining a 1.6-litre turbo with two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery, providing for all-wheel drive and 296bhp.

An electric version, meanwhile, has been ruled out for now as the EMP2 platform isn’t ready for full battery-power. That’s said, an evolution of the EMP2 with full EV compatibility is in the pipeline, and is expected to debut under a new flagship Citroen saloon next year.

Hotly tipped to arrive later this year, possibly at the Paris Motor Show, the DS 4 Crossback is expected to be on sale in the UK in early 2021.

  1. I rarely share my story with people, not only because it put me at the lowest point ever but because it made me a person of ridicule among family and friends. I put all I had into Binary Options ($100,000) after hearing great testimonies about this new investment

strategy. I was made to believe my investment would triple, it started good and I got returns (not up to what I had invested). Gathered more and involved a couple family members, but I didn't know I was setting myself up for the kill, in less than no time all we had put ($300,000) was gone. It almost seem I had set them up, they came at me strong and hard. After searching and looking for how to make those scums pay back, I got introduced to (Troyhermes8@gmail.com) He helped recover about 90% of my lost funds within a month.
