Honda has partnered with Octopus Energy and smart charging specialist Moixa to launch a new intelligent home charging service for the Honda e. It’s called e:Progress, and the UK is the first market to receive the technology, before it’ll be rolled out across Europe.
Octopus Energy supplies the energy, with the guarantee that 100 per cent of its electricity comes from renewable sources. The energy firm also provides access to its new dynamic tariff, giving drivers access to lower electricity prices during off-peak periods.
Moixa’s expertise brings an algorithm that works with Octopus’s dynamic tariff, automatically selecting the most cost-effective time to charge the Honda e’s battery. The system also ensures the EV has enough charge to cover the car’s average daily range, although drivers can change their charging requirements at any time using a smartphone app.
Thanks to these partnerships, Honda says its new home charging service can save Honda e drivers up to £475 per year on electricity when compared with a standard flat tariff.
Currently, the system only works with Honda’s Power Charger S+ wallbox, which is linked to Moixa’s software using its built-in 4G connectivity. That means drivers will have to pay £1,500 (including government incentives) to take advantage of the scheme.
While that seems a little steep, Honda hopes buyers will view that figure in context of the expected annual energy savings as, in the best-case scenario, the charger should pretty much pay for itself within the first three years of use. The charger can be ordered from British Gas, through its Local Heroes website.
Honda promises the switch to its e:Progress scheme will be “seamless.” Buyers can check their eligibility on Honda’s webpage, which offers instructions on how to switch to Octopus Energy’s dynamic tariff and subscribe to the intelligent charging service.
