With the recent 2018 Geneva Motor Show once again proving Europe’s credentials as a crucible for new cars, attention now turns to America. It’s very nearly New York’s turn to host the world’s car makers and show what new metal the US has to offer.
The 2018 New York Motor Show gets underway very soon with the doors at Manhattan's Javits Centre opening to the world’s press on 28 March, and we’ll have boots on the ground chasing up the show’s biggest stories.
• 2018 Geneva Motor Show round-up
The New York show is North America’s oldest car exposition. First held in 1900 at Madison Square Gardens, an estimated 48,000 visitors attended the original edition of the show over the space of a week. Today, it’s estimated that over one million car fans will pass through the New York show's doors before they close on 8 April.
Unsurprisingly the show is heavily slanted towards the US car market – huge SUVs, trucks and saloons not destined for European shores are usually the order of the day, while plenty of cars we’ve already seen at Geneva will be making their North American debuts.
That’s said, some manufacturers like to resist the Geneva urge and save a big international reveal or two for New York. Here’s our preview of what’s coming to the Big Apple this year and what UK car buyers should get most excited about...
New York Motor Show 2018: This year's big debuts
Cadillac XT4
Cadillac will go after the BMW X1 at the New York show with a third SUV called the XT4. It'll be one of the show's biggest stars, but isn't at all relevant for the UK and European market. Spearheading the brand's push into the crossover segment, it will be slightly larger than its European counterparts.
Kia K900
Another big reveal for the North American market. Away from Europe, Kia competes in the luxury saloon segment and the new K900 is sized appropriately - the 3,105mm wheelbase is longer than that of a regular Mercedes S-Class.
Mercedes-Benz C-Class facelift
We've already seen the C-Class saloon recieve generous updates at the Geneva show earlier this month, and the coupe and convertible versions of Merc's compact executive car are next on the agenda. Similarly subtle design updates are introduced, alongside the same infotainment upgrades inside the cabin. The fire-breathing, turbochaged V8 C 63 Coupe is likely to land in New York too.
Subaru Forester
Another debut with UK relevance, the next Subaru Forester is on the way. The firm's upmcoming Mazda CX-5 rival is expected to go on sale before the year is out, sharing its platform with the XV and latest Impreza. Its design is likely to be based on that of the Viziv Future concept from the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show.
Toyota RAV4
The teaser image above previews the new Toyota RAV4, which will be inspired by the FT-AC Concept revealed at the Los Angeles Motor Show late in 2017. It'll use Toyota's TNGA platform, so hybrid technology lifted from the Prius and new Auris is a given.
Volkswagen Atlas coupe
We don't get Volkswagen's enormous Atlas here in the UK, but the firm is planning to double up with a five-seat, coupe-roofed version of its largest SUV for the American market. A near production concept of the new model will be revealed at the New York show next week.
