Volkswagen has added a fifth engine to the T-Roc range, in the form of a 1.6-litre turbo diesel.

The 1.6 TDI makes 113bhp and 250Nm, and slips below the T-Roc’s only previous diesel option, a 2.0-litre TDI with 148bhp. Unlike that model, which sends power to all four wheels, the 1.6 is front-wheel drive only. The new addition to the T-Roc line-up has been tested to the latest WLTP emissions standards, in which it achieves a rating of 115g/km. The other engine options include three turbo petrols with capacities of 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0-litres.

The new unit will give the T-Roc a more direct diesel alternative to rivals like the Nissan Juke. It’s a well-used engine across the VW Group - it already sees service in the Golf and Touran, and powers similarly priced crossovers like the SEAT Arona and Skoda Karoq.

It’s offered across all five trim levels: S, SE, Design, SEL and R-Line. The most basic S gets a standard kit list which includes an eight-inch colour touchscreen with a digital radio, Bluetooth, climate control, LED daytime running lights and an autonomous emergency braking system. Top spec R-Line models feature sporty styling add-ons and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Available to order now, the T-Roc 1.6 TDI is priced from £21,290 in S trim, and rises to £27,010 for the top spec R-Line. That makes it £2,335 more expensive than the entry level petrol choice, the 1.0-litre TSI. That unit produces the same 113bhp, but at 200Nm, produces less torque.
