Mercedes-AMG has chopped the roof off its range-topping GT R coupe, for a limited production run of 750 GT R Roadsters

Mercedes-AMG has announced it will build a limited run roadster version of its GT R sports car. Restricted to 750 units, the new model features the same performance upgrades as the coupe, as well as a new set of lightweight alloys and an electronically folding fabric roof.

It’s powered by a 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 engine that sends its power through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox to the rear wheels. Performance figures stand at 568bhp and 700Nm of torque, with Mercedes-AMG claiming a 0–62mph sprint of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 196mph.

Best convertibles for 2019

The Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster comes as standard with active engine mounts, an electronically controlled locking differential, lowered suspension with adaptive dampers, active rear-wheel steering and a carbon fibre tunnel brace to increase structural rigidity.

Exterior revisions over the standard GT Roadster include a deeper front splitter with active cooling louvres, a large rear diffuser, lower side skirts, a pair of wider carbon fibre wings, an adjustable rear spoiler and a set of staggered alloys, with 19-inch wheels on the front axle and 20-inch wheels for the rear.

As standard, the GT R Roadster’s interior gets Nappa leather upholstery, a pair of heavily-bolstered sports seats, a 10.25-inch digital gauge cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment system, an AMG steering wheel, black shift paddles, and carbon fibre trim.

Optional extras include Mercedes’s neck-level AIRSCARF heating system, a ceramic braking system and a range of upholstery colours. AMG’s carbon fibre package is also available, swapping the standard GT R Roadster’s mirror caps, front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser for lightweight carbon alternatives.

Mercedes UK couldn’t confirm whether the AMG GT R Roadster will reach the UK market. However, should it arrive in dealers, we expect prices to start from around £150,000, falling in line with the £10,000 premium imposed on the convertible versions in the AMG GT range.
