A fully-electric Ford Transit is being designed with city-based last-mile delivery companies in mind

Ford has confirmed that an all-electric version of the full-size Transit van is under development and will enter production two years from now in 2021, as part of a wide-ranging electrification push from the manufacturer.

Specifications for the van have not been outlined, and so far Ford has only publicly stated its intent to electrify its iconic commercial vehicle. However, it says that the Transit EV will be available in multiple body styles once volume production begins in 2021.

As such, expect various wheelbase lengths, roof heights and door types for a range of applications and requirements.

Ford has not issued any powertrain details nor an estimated all-electric range, but we don’t anticipate that the brand has a huge figure in mind given the urban, last-mile delivery environment the electric Transit is being planned for. A “practical daily driving range for city-based businesses” has been touted, while a competitive payload has been promised too.

It’ll be a rival for the new Mercedes eSprinter when it arrives two years from now. The electric Mercedes van features a battery 55kWh in size in the top spec model, enabling what Mercedes claims is a real-world range of 93 miles on a single charge.

Alongside the announcement of the new Transit EV, Ford has revealed a new plug-in hybrid variant of the Tourneo Custom minibus, capable of 31 miles of electric driving and on sale later this year.
