A heavily-disguised version of the all-new Kia Sorento has been caught on camera during its development phase. Due to reach UK showrooms by next year, the new model will feature updated styling and a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the first time.
Judging by this mule’s heavy camouflage, the all-new Sorento will benefit from a substantial styling update, with boxier dimensions than the old model. A fresh face, with new LED headlights and the brand’s trademark “tiger nose” grille can be picked out, along with a more steeply raked roofline and a redesigned tailgate.
The new Sorento will also grow in size. The spy shots helpfully show the Kia will match more premium rivals, such as the BMW X5, in terms of length and height. However, it’s not expected that Kia will attempt to push the Sorento upmarket, with the newcomer remaining a rival for models like Hyundai Santa Fe and Skoda Kodiaq.
Inside, Kia’s new flagship SUV will likely receive plenty of soft-touch plastics, customisable ambient mood lighting and the brand’s latest 10.25-inch infotainment system, lifted from the Soul EV. Like the old model, it will only be offered as a four-wheel-drive seven-seat SUV.
We expect the new Sorento to be offered with one diesel engine, with buyers given the choice of either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic gearbox, while a new plug-in hybrid powertrain will also make its way onto the Sorento for the first time. It’s likely to comprise a four-cylinder petrol engine being mated to an electric motor and an automatic gearbox.
