Suzuki has revealed the first picture of its next hot hatchback – the all-new Swift Sport, which will make its full debut in the metal at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

All the key details remain officially under wraps for now, so we’ll have to wait for official word from Suzuki for confirmation of the powertrain, price and sale date, but it should stay true to the previous generation car’s role of providing a junior hot hatch experience on a budget.

Frankfurt Motor Show 2017: preview

It will serve as a rival for the likes of the upcoming Volkswagen Up! GTI, while turbocharged, 1.0-litre, 138bhp versions of the new Ford Fiesta are also in the Swift Sport’s sights.

We expect Suzuki to keep the Swift Sport broadly in line with the previous generation model by making use of a new engine providing a similar power output. As such, the turbocharged, 138bhp 1.4-litre four-cylinder Boosterjet petrol engine found in the Vitara S could be a good fit.

While this powertrain would only add another 4bhp to the mix, a substantial torque boost in tandem with the new car’s overall reduced kerb weight should boost performance, while it’ll deliver better fuel economy and refinement too.

Suzuki has issued one picture of the Swift Sport, serving up a small glimpse of the new hot hatch. A fresh front apron with large, aggressive cuts, a new front grille and a small front splitter gives the car’s face a sportier character, while new side skirts and large diamond-cut alloy wheels are also fitted. We’re still waiting for a snap of the Swift Sport’s rear though.

Inside we expect the cabin to be given a mild makeover to indicate the car’s performance credentials, but it’ll also benefit from the new Swift’s smart new interior and technology options, including a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a new 4.2-inch display embedded in the instrument panel, Bluetooth connectivity, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Prices should stay broadly in line with that of the older model, meaning a sub £16,000 price tag is likely when the new Swift Sport hits showrooms in 2018.
