Speculation that the Porsche 911 GT2 RS has broken the production car lap record at the Nurburgring is rising, after the manufacturer confirmed there’d be news of its attempt later this week.
Porsche posted an image of the car at the ‘Ring’s famous ‘Karussell’ corner on the German marque’s official Facebook page, along with the caption: “Here we go again. Look out for the story behind this image on Wednesday.”
Rumours of a sub 6:50 time have been circulating in recent days, with reports suggesting that onlookers have clocked the GT2 RS lapping in that region.
It needs to beat the Lamborghini Huracan Performante’s time of 6:52 to claim the production car record, which was set earlier this year.
There was some suggestion that Lamborghini’s time shouldn’t be allowed to stand thanks to its use of ultra grippy tyres, however it transpired that the Pirelli compound used during the Performante’s attempt was indeed an optional extra, and therefore legal.
Of course, there is no ‘official’ Nurburgring lap record list, leaving the fastest times up for debate. Back in May the NextEV NIO EP9 laid claim to top spot with an impressive time of 6:45.9, only for sceptics to point out that the all-electric car had fitted with bespoke tyres.
If Porsche wants to definitely claim the Nurburgring crown for itself with the 911 GT2 RS, it would do well to stick with a true production setup…
