Subaru's new concept for October's Tokyo Motor Show will preview a next-generation WRX and semi-autonomous driving systems

Subaru is gearing up for the Tokyo Motor Show by teasing its new VIZIV Performance Concept, a new sports saloon which will be the brand's headline act at the show next month.

Two teaser images of the new concept have been issued. Looking at the concept head on, it adopts a face reminiscent of recent Subaru design studies, such as the VIZIV-7 concept from the LA Motor Show last year and the brand’s Vision GT Concept for the Gran Turismo racing series. The second teaser image highlights the car’s sporty credentials, with a glimpse of the concept’s rear wing, flared wheel arches and sharp, sculpted lines running down the doors.

As the show car is an aggressive looking saloon, it’s not hard to see beyond the VIZIV Performance Concept being a glimpse at a next-generation WRX

It’s also possible to make out a pair of thin, rear-view cameras replacing the door mirrors. Subaru promises that alongside sportiness, technology will play a key role in the concept’s story – it’ll showcase new ‘advanced’ driver-assist technology.

Subaru is aiming to introduce semi-autonomous driving capabilities to its EyeSight driver assist technology by 2020, so it’s likely that the VIZIV Performance Concept will be our first glimpse at the firm’s semi-autonomous setup too.

It’ll be presented alongside new special edition versions of both the WRX and the BRZ for the Japanese market.

The new S208 WRX STI receives more aggressive styling tweaks inside and out, building on the S207 version of the car with additional power and performance, plus a lower centre of gravity with improved suspension. 450 units will go on sale in Japan, to be sold via lottery.

Alongside it will be yet another special edition BRZ. Subaru is yet to give the BRZ the full STI treatment, but the STI Sport is another tantalising look at an uprated version of the firm’s rear-wheel-drive sports car. It also receives new styling tweaks and uprated suspension, but no additional power. 100 units will be made available, and like the S208 WRX STI, they’ll be sold on the Japanese market via lottery.
