The all-new Audi RS 7 will get an optional 700bhp plug-in powertrain derived from the Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, Auto Express can confirm. Speaking to our sister publication Evo, head of Audi design Marc Lichte said the new car will be available with two engine options for the first time.
Despite the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid and forthcoming RS 7 hybrid featuring a similar petrol-electric setup, the four-door Audi will be based on a brand-new platform due for reveal later this year.
Customers who don’t opt for the hybrid powertrain will benefit from the same VW Group twin-turbo V8 engine found in Bentley’s Continental GT and the Panamera Turbo.

Lichte, states the standard V8 will have around 650bhp and 800Nm of torque, with the hybrid adding plug-in power for a short all-electric range and improved performance. Both the regular RS 7 and the hybrid car will come with the latest eight-speed S-tronic gearbox, with drive going to all four wheels via the brand’s venerable quattro system.
Like the outgoing car, the new RS 7 should be capable of sprinting from 0-62mph in less than four seconds, as well as an electronically limited top speed of 155mph. Remove the limiter, however, and the A6-based RS 7 should hit 190mph. The range-topping Hybrid could be quicker still.
The RS 7 will be Audi Sport’s first plug-in hybrid when it goes on sale towards the end of 2018. By further developing the lithium-ion drive battery pack and electric motor power system, Audi will be able to extract an extra 150bhp from the combustion engine, resulting in a total power output in the region of 700bhp.
Audi’s new RS 7 plug-in is likely to command a big premium over its conventionally-powered V8 sibling, though prices and specs won’t be revealed until nearer the car’s launch.
