Audi has confirmed that it will arrive at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show with a new concept car in tow and has served up a tentative glimpse of its new creation with a series of teaser sketches.
The new concept is called Audi AI:me and for now the brand describes it as a show car showcasing “the vision of an automated driving compact car for the megacities of tomorrow”.
Looking at the teaser sketches gives us a somewhat decent impression of what the final item should look like. The AI:me looks like it will be a hatchback with a tall rear end, not too dissimilar to Volkswagen Group concepts like the I.D. hatchback and the recently revealed SEAT el-born, which use the group’s MEB platform.
Distinctive Audi touches include a sharp interpretation of the brand’s current design language at the front, flared and squared wheel-arches, and a particularly upright rear, not too dissimilar to the A2 of old.
However, we’d be surprised if this turns out to be a close-to-production preview of an upcoming model. A render shot of the dashboard and steering wheel confirms that a true to form concept car cabin will likely be found inside the AI:me. The name itself is a giveaway too – all recent Audi concept cars showcasing near-showroom ready electric models have all been filed under the new e-tron model family, unlike the AI:me.
All will be revealed on the first press day of the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show, taking place on 15 April.
