A new, all-electric Mercedes four-door saloon has been caught on camera for the first time. Expected to be called the EQS it will form part of the German manufacturer's plan to launch 10 all-electric models by 2022.
This all-electric saloon will act as the flagship model for the German brand’s new “EQ” range, joining the existing EQC SUV and forthcoming EQV MPV and EQA hatchback. As the model is already in its development phase it’s likely that Mercedes could preview the model as a concept car at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
The prototype, spotted testing in Germany, looks similar in size and shape to the Mercedes CLS coupe, sharing its sharply tapering rear end and low roofline. Beneath the disguise, it is also possible to make out several of Mercedes-EQ design traits, such as a pair of swept-back headlights and a blanked off radiator grille.
We expect the new EQS to borrow its technology and running gear from elsewhere in the Mercedes-EQ range. The German brand’s all-electric drivetrain was first seen on the EQC, where an 80kWh battery pack and a pair of electric motors provide the SUV with 259 miles of range, 403bhp and all-wheel-drive.
This EQS coupe-saloon will use a similar setup, with an electric motor for each axle. However, due to its position as the brand’s flagship EV, we expect it will be fitted with a larger battery pack offering a greater driving range and better performance.
