The New Year kicks off with the Detroit Motor Show, which opens its doors on 13 January. Known formally as the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), Detroit has hosted the exhibition annually since 1987. Detroit is commonly referred to as Motor City, as it is the home of General Motors and Ford.
Many of the new models taking to the stage at Detroit will be geared towards the American market, but we will see some big global debuts from Mercedes and Lexus. Below we round all there is to know about next year’s Detroit Motor Show.

Hyundai
Hyundai’s quirky Veloster coupe never quite resonated with the UK market, but that hasn’t stopped the Korean manufacturer from developing a second-generation model. Tailored for its domestic market, the Korean-exclusive Mk2 Veloster was teased by Hyundai ahead of its Detroit unveiling boasting a similar shape to the Mk1, with changes including a rear diffuser and Kona-inspired front grille. It will come with a pair of turbocharged petrol engines in 1.4 and 1.6-litre displacement and a choice of six-speed manual or seven-speed DCT gearboxes.

Lexus
Lexus will reveal a new LF-1 Limitless SUV concept at Detroit. Judging by the teaser image, there are strong hints that this could be a small coupe crossover similar to the Toyota C-HR. The Japanese brand’s CALTY design studio in Southern California created the swooping coupe design, which has been describe as the ‘luxury flagship’.
Mercedes
Mercedes has only just taken the wraps off the new CLS but already the brand has an AMG performance model in the pipeline. The four-door coupe will introduce a new AMG 53 moniker, which will be exclusive to models using a performance based hybrid system; it will feature a more powerful version of Merc’s new 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six engine.
Another big debut from the German brand will be an all-new version of the G-Class SUV. It’s based on a new platform with the aim of increasing practicality and comfort.

Volkswagen
Volkswagen may have axed the Jetta from its UK line-up, but the German marque will be launching a seventh-generation of its compact saloon at NAIAS. The teaser sketch reveals a design similar to VW’s Arteon four-door coupe but with a more traditional saloon body. It will be based on VW Group’s MQB platform, which underpins everything from the Polo to the new T-ROC SUV.
