Eight examples of hardcore Morgan will be built as a final hurrah for the 17-year-old Aero 8 sports car

Morgan has teased a swansong race-bred edition of its Aero 8 sports car called the Aero GT, which will be revealed next March at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show. The Malvern-based manufacturer will build just eight examples and claims it’s the ‘most extreme roadgoing Morgan to date’.

The Aero GT utilises the Aero 8’s hand built aluminium body, though tweaked with additional aerodynamic appendages to reduce drag and increase downforce.

The race-derived louvres above the front wheels provide additional downforce at the front and are lifted directly from the Aero 8 GT3 racing car. Grip at the rear is improved thanks to a large diffuser.

Power comes from the Aero 8’s 4.8-litre naturally aspirated BMW V8, with 367bhp and 490Nm of torque on tap via a six-speed manual gearbox. 0-62mph remains at 4.5 seconds and the top speed is 170mph, the same as the Aero 8. It’s also the last naturally aspirated BMW engine ever fitted to a production car as all current BMW engines are turbocharged.

It also marks the end of the Aero 8, which first began production in 2000. It was a radical addition to Morgan’s range, being constructed with aluminium instead of utilising Morgan’s traditional wood-based craftsmanship.

It was also Morgan’s first all-new car since the 1964 Plus 4 Plus, which spawned the 1968 Plus 8. The Aero 8 ended production in 2010 but it was revived five years later at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

All eight Aero GTs have been individually numbered and have been sold to Morgan’s most loyal customers, who will receive their cars with bespoke features at their request.
