Volkswagen’s new Jetta saloon has been officially teased ahead of its full reveal at the Detroit Motor Show in January.
Our first glimpse of the seventh-generation Jetta comes not long after the current sixth-generation car was axed from the UK line-up.
• New Volkswagen Arteon review
With the European saloon market feeling the squeeze thanks to the advance of SUVs and crossovers, VW has dropped its smallest saloon offering in Britain, leaving just the Passat and new Arteon. The car seen here has been designed with foreign markets – particularly the North American market – in mind, and is unlikely to go on sale in Britain.
The teaser sketch issued by Volkswagen suggests that the next Jetta will take some design inspiration from the new Arteon. At the front, what appears to be a new, broader grille directly borders new, sharper looking headlights.
The smaller Jetta obviously lacks the coupe-like roofline of the flagship Arteon, but there’s still a similarity between the two cars when viewed side on, especially thanks to the Jetta’s bolder looking shoulder line.
We’ll have to wait for official pictures of the car in the metal to confirm its Arteon inspired makeover. Under the skin we expect the Jetta to make use of the Volkswagen Group’s ubiquitous MQB platform, meaning that the new saloon should support a wide range of engines including the latest TSI Evo petrol units.
