Best cars for 2020 and beyond header

Before you know it 2020 will be upon us, and along with the hods of people questioning where the last decade went, there will be a host of new cars. From the humble Vauxhall Corsa to the hotly anticipated Polestar 2, you can rest assured that there will be plenty to get excited about.

Any new exhilarating cars Auto Express uncovers which are set to arrive next decade will be added to this page over the next two years –  so make sure you visit the site regularly. Without further ado, below is our top five best cars for 2020 and beyond.

Polestar 2

Price: From £35,000 (est)
On sale: 2020

Whereas the Polestar 1 is a very exclusive car, the Polestar 2 will be very different. Not only is it pure electric, it will also be available in right-hand drive and be far more affordable, aimed at Tesla’s Model 3.

It’s expected to be Polestar’s top-seller, but there are few technical details yet. Yet the brand has confirmed that as well as buying cars outright online or through 80 planned stores, customers can run them via a subscription service; a monthly fee covers the car’s cost, servicing and insurance for two or three years.

SEAT Leon

Price: From £18,000 (est)
On sale: 2020

With the success of the Ibiza, Ateca and AronaSEAT is on a roll at the moment, but possibly its most important model will be with us in 2020. The Mk4 Leon – previewed in our exclusive image – will not only take the fight to the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf, but also bring in a new design language that will spread across the range. And we expect it will be one of the first SEATs to be available as a plug-in hybrid and as a fully electric car, using technology already found in the Golf.

Skoda Vision E

Price: From £35,000 (est)
On sale: 2020

A year after the company’s first hybrid appears in 2019, Skoda’s first all-electric car is expected in 2020. However, other than the production date, very little is confirmed about the car. We believe that it will be some sort of SUV, with the Vision E concept that was seen at the Frankfurt and Shanghai shows last year providing the best clues as to what it will look like.

The car will be based on the same MEB platform as VW’s I.D. EV, and have a range of around 310 miles. Bosses describe it as the most dynamic Skoda ever.

Vauxhall Corsa

Price: From £12,000 (est)
On sale: 2020

The new Corsa will be hugely significant, as the first Vauxhall to be produced under the ownership of PSA. It will share its platform – and its engines – with the next Peugeot 208 and DS 3 Crossback, and an electric version has already been confirmed.

Our exclusive image indicates that the car will still look like a Vauxhall, but it’ll be much bigger than at present, giving more cabin and boot space. However, we also expect it to be lighter, bringing better fuel economy. It’s possible that only five-doors will be sold.

Volkswagen I.D.

Price: From £30,000 (est)
On sale: 2020

Volkswagen has been talking about the I.D. family for some time, but the first car – the Tesla Model 3-rivalling I.D. hatchback – is set to go on sale in 2020. And our exclusive image previews how it will look. Bosses have said that it will cost much the same as a diesel-engined Golf, and that it will be the first model to use Volkswagen’s MEB electric car platform. We understand that a choice of up to four battery capacities will be offered, but buyers can expect a range of at least 300 miles from even the smallest.

Volkswagen I.D. Vizzion

Price: N/A
On sale: 2020 (China)

Roughly the same size as the Mercedes S-Class and Audi A8, the Vizzion is the latest member of VW’s all-electric I.D. family to be previewed. The I.D. range will be launched with a Golf-sized five-door, but China is already a crucial EV market, and many buyers there still want a saloon shape. So we’d expect a production I.D. Vizzion to be in dealers, in that region at least, by the end of 2020.

Now you know what is coming in the distant future, why not take a read of the best cars for 2019?
