This is the first glimpse of the Skoda Kamiq, a China-only SUV that will make its public debut at the forthcoming Beijing Motor Show.

A series of sketches of the car show that it carries well-established Skoda SUV design cues, including a prominent, wide front grille, subtle surfacing on the bonnet that’s tied into the badge position, and a single, sharp line along the flanks that runs from the headlights to the tail-lights.

Skoda has yet to confirm the name, incidentally, but the new model is expected to follow the existing SUV naming pattern and be called Kamiq.

The sketch of the rear shows some chrome detailing below the bumper but significantly, the tail-light design is much simpler than the complex set-ups on Skoda’s existing SUVs, the Kodiaq and Karoq.

That’s because the new model is designed to be significantly cheaper to produce than either of those cars; instead of the usual MQB architecture, it will be based on the VW Group’s PQ25 platform, which also underpins the Rapid. The new SUV is likely to be produced alongside that vehicle in Yizheng, China.

The Kamiq should be one of a family of four SUVs offered by Skoda in China, joining the Karoq and Kodiaq in a line-up that will then be bolstered further by a coupe version of the last of the models.

Skoda executives have freely admitted that, unlike the Kamiq, the Kodiaq coupe could have sales potential in other regions, including Europe - but the firm is currently hamstrung by manufacturing capacity and unable to commit to making it outside of China.
