Citroen's city car gets the same engine updates as the new Toyota Aygo, plus a handful of new driver assists

The Citroen C1 has been subtly updated for 2018, with new colours and interior trim options, fresh driver aids and cabin tech, plus an updated engine.

Appearance wise the car basically keeps its current looks – the only changes you’ll find on the outside are new badges at the rear using Citroen’s latest brand typeface. Three new body paint colours are available though, alongside new bi-tone roof shades and options for the fabric roofed Airscape version. In total, Citroen claims 32 different combinations are possible, while a handful of new interior trim choices arrive too.

The C1’s list of driver assistance features grows to include automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, hill start assist and a reversing camera system. Traffic sign recognition has been added too, while Citroen says that the Mirror Screen app for smartphone mirroring has been enhanced, now featuring Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink on the 7-inch touchscreen unit.

The biggest change comes under the bonnet, with the arrival of an updated three-cylinder petrol engine. No surprise here really – it’s the same engine found in the newly facelifted Toyota Aygo (which shares the C1's platform) and it produces 71bhp. It’s likely to boast improved official fuel economy figures too, the combined cycle number swelling to around the 72mpg mark. Both a five-speed manual and an automatic version will be offered.

Marking the arrival of the 2018 C1, two special edition models have been confirmed for the UK. The C1 Elle arrives with similar styling tweaks to the larger C3 Elle, while the C1 Urban Ride takes after the concept of the same name from 2014. It drops that car’s mechanical revisions, but carries over some of its crossover inspired styling. Both are based on range topping Flair versions of the C1, and go on sale in the UK on 1 May. The C1 Elle will be priced from £12,705, while the Urban Ride arrives from £12,225.
