Peugeot has officially revealed its answer to the Skoda Superb Estate and Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer: the new 508 SW.

The latest estate gets the same squat stance as the 508 Fastback saloon, and is almost identical from the nose to the B-pillar. Beyond that, the body has been extended while the new 508 SW sits 60mm lower than its predecessor.

Estate buyers are often interested in just one thing: the boot. At 530 litres, the SW’s load area is 30 litres smaller than before and 130 litres down on the class-leading Skoda Superb’s. It’s a sacrifice Peugeot has decided to make for the sleeker exterior design.

However, the ‘Magic Flat’ seats fold flush at the flick of a switch, and create 1,780 litres of space – the same as in the Volkswagen Passat Estate. In addition, top-spec cars get aluminium boot rails and luggage nets to secure loose items.

Inside the SW features Peugeot’s i-Cockpit digital dashboard, small steering wheel and raised dials, with a raised centre console and ‘wraparound’ seats. Five massage functions are available, as well as leather and Alcantara trim.

Two petrol engines and three diesels will be offered: a 1.6 PureTech petrol with 178bhp or 222bhp, plus 1.5 and 2.0 BlueHDi diesels from 127bhp to 178bhp. The entry-level diesel gets a six-speed manual, while the rest of the range comes with an eight-speed auto. A plug-in hybrid with an all-electric range of 32 miles will arrive late next year.

The 508 SW is also packed with safety kit, including adaptive cruise control, lane and park assist and a driver alert feature, while night-vision technology is a first for this sector.

It’s expected that all 508s will get Connected 3D Nav with TomTom Traffic info, as well as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard. UK prices and specs will be announced once the car appears at September’s Paris Motor Show, but we can expect them  to start from around £27,500
