On the eve of the reveal of the new Audi e-tron all-electric SUV, the German firm has announced it is planning 12 all electric vehicles by 2025, across numerous segments and on a series of distinct electric platforms.
Following the launch of the e-tron SUV, a coupe styled version of the Tesla Model X rival will land in 2019, both models using a heavily adapted version of the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo platform. In unmodified form, this is the same tech that underpins VW Group flagship SUVs like the Bentley Bentayga and Lamborghini Urus.

However, another member of the e-tron family will be revealed before the end of 2018. Audi has confirmed that it will present a fresh concept car at the Los Angeles Motor Show at the end of November, called the Audi e-tron GT concept. Full Technical details will have to wait until the show, but Audi says it is a “highly dynamic coupe with a flat floor assembly”, developed in collaboration with Porsche.
As such, it’s not hard to imagine this concept being Audi’s spin on Porsche’s upcoming Taycan four-door coupe, making use of the same J1 platform. Teased earlier this year, it could enter production in 2020.
The GT concept isn’t the only Audi/Porsche EV collaboration. A platform known as Premium Platform Electric (PPE) is currently being developed by the Volkswagen Group’s two premium branches, which will support a range of all-wheel-drive electric vehicles from B-segment through to D-segment. Audi says that both SUVs and ‘classic’ bodyshapes including Avant estates and Sportback hatchbacks will be built on the platform.
Audi also has plans to use the group’s new MEB platform that will debut on the upcoming Volkswagen I.D. hatchback, which could include an A3 sized car available in showrooms from 2020. Audi says that it is planning a series of models on MEB, with particular focus on a premium A-segment city car being developed primarily for the Chinese market.
Alongside the rollout of all-electric vehicles, Audi also promises that its range of plug-in hybrids will be expanded greatly too. Auto Express understands that eight nameplates in the current Audi line-up will be available with plug-in technology by 2025. The firm expects 30-35 per cent of its sales to be electrified by then, if you include 48-volt mild hybrid cars.
