Plug-in version of new range-topping C5 Aircross SUV will arrive on sale next year with 222bhp

Citroen has confirmed that it will preview its first ever plug-in hybrid vehicle at October’s Paris Motor Show with a thinly veiled concept version of the upcoming C5 Aircross PHEV.

Officially, the car on Citroen’s Paris stand will be called the Citroen C5 Aircross SUV Hybrid Concept, but it’s hardly a concept in appearance. Official images reveal that it looks like any other member of the firm’s flagship SUV line-up, with only a show livery and blue accents on some of the Airbump panels differentiating it.

Not due on sale until 2019, the production version of the C5 Aircross PHEV will be one of the first PSA group vehicles on the company’s relatively new EMP2 platform to gain plug-in hybrid technology. It’ll arrive alongside PHEV versions of the new Peugeot 508 saloon and the DS 7 Crossback, which is expected to debut at the show.

Total system power is rated at 222bhp, with up to 31 miles of range on battery power alone touted. CO2 emissions are claimed to be under 49g/km.

Though Citroen will be right at the forefront of PSA’s plug-in hybrid strategy with the C5 Aircross PHEV, it will be one of the last PSA brands to go electrified across the board. Citroen plans to offer an electrified version of every model it makes by 2025 and will produce a fully electric vehicle on PSA’s e-CMP platform in 2020.

While Citroen will wait until 2020, sister brand DS will reveal its first e-CMP EV next month at the show in the form of a fully electric version of the upcoming DS 3 Crossback.
