Coming up on the agenda for Land Rover is a refreshed Discovery Sport, which has been spotted testing ahead of landing late next year.
Since introduction in 2015 the model has overtaken the Range Rover Evoque to become the British 4x4 brand’s top seller, with 119,105 units sold globally during the 2017/18 financial year and over 300,000 in total.
An all-new Evoque will arrive in 2019 complete with plug-in hybrid power, but it’ll be followed by an updated version of the more practical edged Discovery Sport later in the year.
While the new Evoque looks set to move to a new platform called Premium Transverse Architecture (PTA), the Discovery Sport will only be a facelifted model, so we expect it to remain on the long living D8 platform.
Land Rover says that both 48v mild hybrid and 300v plug-in hybrid powertrains are compatible with the new PTA platform, which will enable the firm to cut a significant amount off its fleet-wide CO2 figure.
While this facelifted Discovery Sport won’t use it, the D8 platform looks set to be modified to also accommodate electrification. Land Rover has announced that from 2020, all models will be available with the option of hybrid power. As such, developments for D8 are likely a necessity. A revised, cleaner diesel line-up will arrive too.
The Discovery Sport won’t change much in profile or design. We expect only minor changes such as new headlights, taillights and a new front grille inspired by the newer, larger Discovery.
Our spy photographers managed to get a brief glimpse in the cabin where some more interesting changes are found. The cabin will be updated – a new centre console and infotainment setup can be seen, but it confirms that the Discovery Sport won’t get the Touch Pro Duo dual screen infotainment set-up equipped on new Range Rover line models.
