Our spy photographers have snapped pictures of the next Hyundai Santa Fe, revealing the fresh design heading the way of the largest SUV in the firm’s arsenal.
The current generation model was introduced in 2013, but has since been joined by fresher rivals on the market such as the latest generation Mazda CX-5 and Honda CR-V. As such, Hyundai’s flagship SUV is in need of a refresh.
The sleek styling starts at the new headlights and slithers round to the rear where new brake lights are found. The side mirrors have been lowered slightly to just below the belt line which means they fit sleeker into the overall design.
The car still wears substantial masking, but production bodywork lurks underneath. At the front end, it’s possible to make out slim LED headlights similar to the units fitted to Hyundai’s all-new crossover – the Kona.
The large grille, plus the front bumper design with its large fog lamps mounted high are also taken from the Kona, but elsewhere the Santa Fe will boast design toned down compared to the firm’s eye-catching small SUV and more in line with the firm's core cars, like the new i30.
The present Santa Fe boasts just one engine option in the UK – a 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel pushing 194bhp through to the standard all-wheel-drive system. It’s been around since the second-generation model, so the next Santa Fe could switch to a new, cleaner and more efficient power unit in line with Euro 6 emission standards.
It’s possible that hybrid technology could appear further down the line too. Hyundai has just revealed that 31 models across the Hyundai and Kia line-up will be low emission vehicles by 2020, with plans to expand its hybrid line-up to include SUVs and large vehicles. It’s still very early doors for hybrid talk, however, and we don’t expect to see the new Santa Fe go on sale in the UK until 2019.
