The Volkswagen Group is to roll out a diesel trade-in scheme in the UK, the full details of which will be revealed “shortly”, according to a group spokesperson.

Volkswagen has just confirmed plans to introduce a trade-in scheme in Germany, revealing initiatives for the Volkswagen and Audi brands. More Volkswagen Group marques are expected to confirm similar schemes soon, before specific UK plans are confirmed – presently, the firm’s brands are considering its offers.

Volkswagen diesel scandal: latest news

In Germany, owners of diesel cars through Euro 1 to 4 emission standards will be offered trade-in bonuses for new cars; the trade-in offer does not exclusively relate to VW Groups cars, owners of any brand of vehicle qualify for the trade-in incentive. It’s a similar scheme to the one revealed by BMW last week, and follows and announcement of a free software update to reduce emissions on Euro 5 and 6 cars.

Discounts of up to €10,000 (£9,022) on a new Volkswagen Group car are on the table for German owners who want to scrap their old vehicles, confirmed by both Audi and Volkswagen’s plans.

More modest incentives are on the table for cheaper models, while top-up style bonuses will be applied alongside government grants on electric and plug-in vehicles.

The scheme will run until 31 December this year in Germany. UK specific details will arrive in the coming weeks.
