The 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show is the final encore in the year's automotive exhibition setlist, taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in California and opening to the public between December 1 and 10. As usual, we'll be bringing you the LA Motor Show action a little earlier with the first press day getting underway on November 29th.
The LA show is one of the oldest motoring shows still running today, with the first LA Auto Show taking place in 1907. Manufacturers from the United States and the rest of the world will descend on La La Land to showcase their brand new production cars and groundbreaking concept designs.
LA represents the final big chance in 2017 for manufacturers to grab the public’s attention, if they hadn’t already done so at Detroit, Tokyo, Geneva or Paris. Below, you can find all the key cars that we're expecting to see at the 2017 LA Motor Show with many of them having already been teased ahead of the 1 December start date.
LA Motor Show 2017: the key cars
BMW
BMW teased its long-awaited i8 Roadster back in July in a brief 20-second video showing the car sporting a camouflage wrap. Prior to the video, we received spy shots of a similarly camouflaged i8 back in February featuring a targa soft-top roof undergoing winter testing in Germany.
It’s likely that, given California’s sunny disposition, that we might finally get to see the official unveiling of the i8 Roadster at this year’s LA Auto Show.
Jeep
Jeep recently released the first images of its all-new Wrangler during a presentation at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, we expect to see the full reveal at this year’s LA Auto Show. The fourth-generation Wrangler still displays the familiar boxy shape to Wrangler 4x4’s of yesteryear, with three and five-door variants expected to be announced.
The new Wrangler is said to feature new infotainment options inside and two petrol engines to choose from. Jeep has previously hinted at hybrid technology in the past, and they are set to introduce hybrid powertrains into its line-up starting with the Wrangler.
Infiniti
Infiniti, Nissan’s luxury offshoot, has released a teaser image of a potential QX70 replacement at an event on 28 November prior to the LA Auto Show. The teaser image reveals very little, other than a sketch of what appears to be a crossover SUV shape, in between an invitation to the grand unveil at Hawthorne Municipal Airport in Los Angeles. The invitation includes the bold claim that the car will be the most advanced Infiniti in the marque's 28-year history, so it’s likely that the crossover will feature autonomous technology and/or an all-electric powertrain.
Land Rover
At the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, Land Rover confirmed that a range of plug-in hybrid Range Rover models would be unveiled at the end of the year to rival the Volvo XC90 T8 PHEV. The new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are set to become PHEVs as part of Jaguar Land Rover’s plan to make all its new models from 2020 electrified.
Prior to the announcement, we found spy photos of camouflaged test mules, with Land Rover releasing an official ‘spy’ image of two Range Rover PHEV’s at a charging point.
Mercedes
Mercedes will probably unveil its next-generation CLS four-door coupe at this year’s LA Auto Show. The car has been spied a number of times during 2017 in camouflage, sporting slimmer headlights and a revised front grille. It is said to share the same platform as the E-Class saloon with the Audi A7 Sportback and BMW 6 Series GranCoupe as its main rivals.
MINI
MINI first unveiled the Electric Concept at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. It has been confirmed that the Electric Concept will be showcased for the booming American EV market, with an eye to entering production in 2019.
The two-tone concept boasted uncharacteristic wheels and blacked-out windows to hide the interior. It’s likely that it will share the electric drivetrain and other technology with the BMW i3, meaning a potential 190-mile range and a 7.5-second sprint from 0-62mph.
Which car do you think will be the highlight of the 2017 LA Motor Show? Let us know in the comments...
