Toyota's 2018 generation change for its Auris family hatch will bring C-HR inspired looks and new platform

New Toyota Auris spied front side

Toyota has been caught testing the replacement for its Auris family hatch ahead of its expected release in the second half of next year. The Vauxhall Astra rival will feature an all-new platform, fresh looks and a cabin overhaul.

Although this camouflaged prototype appears to be wearing a generous helping of duct tape, it's the first time we've seen the overall shape of the new exterior. It looks like Toyota is following the trend by making the roofline lower and the track wider, with a steeply raked rear screen completing the look.

The 2018 Auris will also borrow styling details from the C-HR crossover. As well as the roofline, we can see the same wraparound headlights, while a less extreme version of the rising shoulderline features with a more subtle kink in the rear window.

There will be more inspiration from the C-HR applied inside. Material quality should take a significant step forward as a result, and expect advancements on the infotainment and safety tech front.

As with the latest Prius and C-HR, the next Auris will cross over to Toyota's TNGA platform. The 1.8-litre petrol-electric hybrid powertrain will almost certainly be offered at launch, given 80 per cent of C-HR sales in the UK are hybrids. A turbo petrol engine will follow, but it's possible a diesel might not be offered as Toyota bosses mull over the future of the fuel.
