After the next-generation Audi A6 saloon was spotted winter testing late last year, our spy photographers have caught the Avant estate model on the road for the first time. The BMW 5 Series Touring rival is likely to debut alongside the four-door at March's Geneva Motor Show.

Despite the usual black and white disguise wrapping, exterior details and the overall shape can be seen. As we saw with the saloon, the styling looks to be an evolutionary take on the outgoing car, with similar proportions but sharper detailing in the lights and a wider grille. The rear-end shape looks more coupe-like, though, with a steeply raked rear window.
The latest A6 is set to be new in every sense of the word, with a completely new platform saving around 100kg of weight, a fresh engine range and the latest technology. We've yet to see shots of the interior, but we know it'll feature a watered-down version of the A8's twin-touchscreen infotainment system, doing away with much of the physical buttons and using haptic feedback.
Expect a choice of four cylinder petrol and diesel engines at launch in the A6 Avant. A six-cylinder diesel is likely to arrive soon after, while hotter S and RS models and an e-tron plug-in hybrid will debut at a later date. Most engines are expected to use Audi's 48-volt electrical system with electric turbocharging, bringing greater efficiency and response.
After the motor show debut, first examples of the A6 and A6 Avant will trickle into UK dealers around summer time, with a full bread-and-butter range established by the end of the year.
