Mercedes is currently working on its second-generation CLA fastback saloon, and our spy photographers have given us a first glimpse of the production car’s design before its anticipated 2019 launch.
The front end of the CLA test mule, snapped undergoing winter testing, looks strikingly similar to the larger CLS, which was revealed late last year. The new honeycomb grille design and headlamps visible under the disguise look almost unchanged from the four-door coupe’s larger brother.
The CLA prototype features a more recognisably coupe-like profile compared to its predecessor, with the roofline swooping all the way down to the boot lid. The rear tail-lights also bear plenty of resemblance to the CLS, suggesting Merc will use the tried-and-tested ‘Russian Doll’ approach with the smaller car.
Regarding new engines, it’s not yet known at to what will power the new CLA, but it’s expected to share powertrains with the platform-sharing all-new A-Class due later this year. The current CLA features A-Class engines, and the Mk2 model will likely have some form of mild hybrid powertrain to sit alongside conventional petrol and diesel variants. A hot AMG ‘45’ variant will debut later, likely with upwards of 400bhp – leaving room for a lesser-powered ’35’ variant to feature for the first time.
The new CLA will also undergo a radical overhaul of its interior, ushering in Mercedes’ new twin-screen infotainment setup previewed at CES 2018 for the A-Class. Expect an improvement in quality, too. A Mercedes spokesperson speculated that the new CLA could make its way into its showrooms in 2019.
