Ford has revealed an updated version of its Ranger pick-up ahead of a global debut at the Detroit Motor Show. It will share a stage at the NAIAS alongside the all-new Ford Edge ST.

The revised Mitsubishi L200 rival will first go on sale in North America, with the refreshed model coming to the UK later in the year.

Visually, there are only minor design tweaks to mark this out as the updated model; Ford has reshaped the headlamps and fitted a slimmer front grille, while at the back the Ranger name has been stamped into the tailgate.

In the US the new Ranger has been made available with a 2.3-litre turbocharged EcoBoost petrol engine paired with a new 10-speed automatic gearbox. Ford claims the powertrain delivers V6 levels of performance but with the efficiency of a four-cylinder engine.

Two- and four-wheel drive models are available, with an electronic-locking rear differential available for increased traction.

A new FX4 Off-Road Package has also been launched which adds a Terrain Management System with four driving modes (normal, snow, mud and sand). A Trail Control function is also included, which lets the vehicle modulate braking and acceleration when off-road.

Inside, changes are minimal but Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto has been fitted. A new B&O PLAY sound system and 4G WiFi are also available to customers.
