Mercedes’ Mk3 B-Class coming ‘within the next few years’ according to the German marque, and this is our first glimpse

Mercedes’ third-generation B-Class has been spotted undergoing winter development testing ahead of a planned launch in the ‘next few years’, according to a Mercedes spokesperson.

The current B-Class MPV has been in production since 2011, and therefore a fresh-faced third-generation model is overdue. Our spy photographers have snapped the Mk3 B-Class sporting Merc’s new large mesh front grille seen on most new Mercedes vehicles, such as the new CLS. Crucially, this test mule is missing the traditional bar that spans the width of most Mercedes grilles.

The test mule retains the boxy shape of the current model. Thanks to the revised front end, it looks very similar to the upcoming 2018 A-Class hatchback, which is slightly smaller. More A-Class-inspired design cues can be seen around the back, such as a sporty boot spoiler. The rear bumper is more refined in comparison to the A-Class, as are the rear lights, owing to the B-Class’ MPV genes.

We expect the B-Class to benefit from the same radically overhauled interior as the upcoming A-Class, with a similar large twin-screen infotainment set-up to the larger E and S-Class models. As before, the B-Class will feature increased head and legroom over the A-Class, as well as a number of versatile touches to befit its MPV status.

A Mercedes spokesperson confirmed that a third-generation B-Class MPV is in the works but wasn’t able to give a specific date as to the official introduction. Mercedes said the new B-Class definitely wouldn’t come this year but that we should expect it ‘within the next few years.’ Given prototypes are already being spotted, we should see it before the decade is out.
